THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Men's Basketball withstood a late Southeast Missouri run to defeat the Redhawks 88-77. The victory marked the Bisons' third consecutive win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Charlie Williams got the afternoon's scoring started with seven early points for the Bisons, leading Lipscomb to an early 7-4 advantage.
The Lipscomb defense was stout early, forcing five turnovers in the opening six minutes, including a steal and score from
Mateo Esmeraldo, for a 12-6 advantage coming out of the first media timeout.
The Bisons held SEMO to 2-of-11 at the under-12 media timeout, opening a 15-8 lead.
Out of the timeout, SEMO outscored the Bisons 5-1, cutting the lead to a possession, 16-13.
A pair of free throws from
Kellan Boylan sparked Lipscomb's offense back to life, and the squad punched back with a 7-2 run of its own, getting the lead back out to 24-15 at the under-eight timeout.
Out of the break, Lipscomb ballooned its lead to double-digits, 29-19, when Williams hit another triple for his 10
th point of the game.
SEMO had cut the lead to just six, but
Ethan Duncan got the last shot of the half off with a driving layup that gave the Bisons a 38-30 advantage at the break.
Early in the second half, SEMO cut the Lipscomb lead down to six points, putting pressure on the Bisons just before the first timeout of the frame.
Lipscomb went cold out of the timeout, and SEMO took advantage with a 12-2 run as the Bisons relinquished the lead. SEMO led 52-51 as Kevin Carroll called a timeout.
Out of the timeout, the game felt very disjointed with several fouls being called on both ends of the floor. Lipscomb stayed close with the help of a
Kennedy Okpara triple as the Bisons trailed 59-58 with just over eight minutes left to play.
Lipscomb retook the lead with an Esmeraldo triple with six and a half to go.
TWEET MATEO
Esmeraldo stayed active, giving the SEMO defense fits, scoring from deep and driving to the basket. The teams, however, traded baskets, and the Bisons led by a narrow 71-70 margin with 2:53 left as SEMO called a timeout.
Out of the timeout, another Okpara triple and solid shooting from the free throw line by the Bisons extended its lead 78-72 with 1:25 to play.
Esmeraldo and
Titas Sargiunas iced the game with a pair of free throws and a triple, respectively, as an 11-0 Lipscomb run over 1:42 gave it an 83-72 advantage with 28 seconds to play.
Despite a late Redhawks surge, the Bisons stayed strong to edge SEMO 88-77 for its third-consecutive victory.
