Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls Late to UTC in Sunday Matinee

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb University Women's Basketball team used a seven-point scoring run late in the game against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, but the Mocs picked up the 59-56 win over the Bisons, Sunday afternoon inside Allen Arena.

Final Score: Chattanooga 59, Lipscomb 56
Location: Allen Arena
Records: Lipscomb (1-2), Chattanooga (2-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a struggle for both teams out of the gate on the scoring end, but Hannah Richardson gave the Bisons the 6-2 lead with 5:48 left in the opening quarter on a second-change layup after a Taylor Bowen offensive rebound.

However, the Mocs pulled away from there after a 14-3 run the rest of the quarter to lead 16-9 at the end of the first.

The second quarter was a different story, as the 3-pointers started to fall for the Bisons. Molly Heard connected on back-to-back shots to cut the deficit to 18-15 with 8:12 remaining. A minute later, Addison Melton drained a triple of her own to even the score briefly at 18.

Richardson gave the Bisons the lead again with a turnaround jumper late in the half, 23-22.

Thanks to a 6-of-12 performance from the field and holding UTC to 3-of-12 from the floor, including 1-of-7 in the final minutes of the half, Lipscomb took the 26-25 lead into the locker room.

In the third, the Bisons made it a four-point lead with a second-chance 3-pointer by Heard and a layup by Bowen to make it 31-27. However, the game went back-and-forth as the Mocs took a 41-38 lead late in the quarter.

The Bisons did have a three-point lead going into the final stanza, 44-41.

UTC came out strong in the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run in about a three-plus minute span. From there, Elena Bertrand ended the drought with a free throw, but the Mocs swelled what was a three-point deficit at the end of the third quarter to an 11-point lead with 4:54 left in the game.

Lipscomb had to play catch-up, and they were up for it. The home squad answered with an 11-2 run to cut it to a two-point game with 11 seconds remaining.

After fouling to get to the free throw line, Gianna Corbitt made the first but missed the second with five seconds remaining. The Bisons were able to get a game-tying shot off, but it went wide and the Mocs picked up the three-point win on the road.

The contest saw seven ties and 10 lead changes.
