THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb won by a narrow 66-64 margin on Saturday afternoon against Austin Peay on senior night in Allen Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bisons got out to a good start, winning the tip and scoring on its first possession. Lipscomb continued to be on the front foot, getting out to an early 10-4 advantage after triples from
Ainhoa Cea and
Elena Bertrand.
After another Lipscomb stop and a bucket from
Claira McGowan, Lipscomb was out to a 12-4 lead as Austin Peay called a timeout with 5:30 left in the first frame.
Out of the timeout, the Govs scored five-straight, quickly cutting the Lipscomb lead 12-9.
Austin Peay got within a point, but a pair of Lipscomb triples before the end of the first quarter pushed Lipscomb back out to a 23-18 advantage at the end of the first frame.
Austin Peay stayed in striking distance through the first minutes of the second quarter, but a Lipscomb 6-2 run opened back up a 35-27 lead, giving the Bisons more breathing room before the second quarter media timeout.
The Bisons held a 39-34 advantage as the second half clock was winding down, but an Austin Peay steal and half-court heave found the net and the Govs cut the lead 39-37 heading into the halftime break.
Austin Peay quickly tied the game at 41 each out of the halftime break before a 5-0 Lipscomb run gave Lipscomb back a 46-41 advantage.
The Govs battled back and took its first lead of the night, 52-50, in the waning minutes of the third quarter. Lipscomb tied it back up, but an Austin Peay triple at the third quarter buzzer put the Bisons at a 55-52 deficit.
Austin Peay continued to outpace the Bisons in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, holding a 60-56 advantage with 6:05 left.
Just before the final media timeout, McGowan nailed a much-needed triple for the Bisons, cutting the Austin Peay lead 62-61.
Lipscomb was able to get the lead back with two minutes left when McGowan scored after an Austin Peay turnover. McGowan stayed hot and nailed a triple with 1:27 left in the game, putting the Bisons ahead 66-62.
With a 66-64 lead, Lipscomb missed a shot, but
Addison Melton hustled and forced a jump ball on the rebound that allowed the Bisons to retain possession with 32.0 ticks of the clock left.
Lipscomb was unable to convert offensively and Austin Peay got the ball back with 4.7 seconds left. Austin Peay missed the last shot as the Bisons came away with the 66-64 victory.
HERD NOTES
- McGowan led scoring with 22 points. Molly Heard also scored double-digits with 11 points.
- Heard notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, her second of the season.
- Lipscomb shot 47-percent to Austin Peay's 45-percent.
- The Bisons out-rebounded the Govs 31-30.
