THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Men's Basketball picked up a crucial ASUN victory on the road Saturday with a 94-81 victory over Queens. All five of the Bisons' starters scored in double-digits with
Gyasi Powell leading the way with a career-high 23 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A highly-anticipated matchup began on Saturday afternoon with both teams shooting the ball well.
Jacob Ognacevic and
Charlie Williams started Lipscomb's scoring with a a pair of triples. Queens battled on the other end, however, and Lipscomb trailed 10-9 at the first media timeout of the game.
Out of the timeout, the triples continued to fall for the Bisons with five for the Bisons by the under-12 media timeout. Just before the timeout, Ognacevic hit his second of the night, giving Lipscomb a 19-17 advantage.
The Bisons continued to stay out front with a 24-17 advantage after
Charlie Williams got a couple of buckets in the post.
Queens was tough on defense, but Lipscomb battled through contact. Just before the under-eight timeout, Ognacevic finished through contact for a traditional three-point play and a 26-19 advantage.
The Royals eventually tied the game back up at 30, but
Will Pruitt converted on an and-one just before the under-four media timeout as Lipscomb led 32-30.
The game was tied 33-33 with two minutes left to play in the half, but Queens went on a 4-0 run to lead 37-33 with 1:12 left in the half, prompting a Lipscomb timeout.
A Queens 12-0 run to end the first half saw Lipscomb trail 42-33 at the half.
Out of the halftime locker room, Lipscomb scored five-unanswered after a
Joe Anderson steal and score and a
Gyasi Powell triple cut the lead 42-38.
Powell continued to shoot the ball well, making two more triples that cut the deficit 46-44.
Lipscomb tied the game at 49 each out of the under-16 timeout and continued to pressure the Royals. Over the next four minutes, Lipscomb held the pace and led Queens 59-58.
An and-one from
Will Pruitt and a block and triple from
Charlie Williams gave Lipscomb its largest lead of the night, 73-63, with 9:08 to play to force a Queens timeout.
Lipscomb held the advantage over the next few minutes, but Queens began to cut into the lead. Lipscomb clung to a 79-74 lead with five minutes to play in regulation.
The pace was furious over the next several minutes, but the Bisons continued to fight and finish at the rim, and held onto an 85-79 lead with 2:36 left to play as Queens called a timeout.
The Bisons utilized strong defense and converted at a high clip from the line down the stretch to see out a crucial 94-81 victory at Queens on Saturday afternoon.
HERD NOTES
- All five Lipscomb starters scored double-digits, led by Powell with a career-high 23 points and Anderson with 21.
- The Bisons shot 54-percent from the field and 47-percent from beyond the arc.
- Ognacevic notched another double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, his eighth of the season.
- Lipscomb out-rebounded Queens 29-24 and had 10 second chance points to Queens' four.
