The ASUN Quarterfinal game got off to a physical, fast-paced start, with each team scoring on its first possession. FGCU held a slight 11-8 advantage at the first media timeout.
Out of the break, the squads held pace for a couple of minutes, but FGCU went on a 6-0 run, opening a 24-14 advantage, forcing a Kevin Carroll timeout with 12:43 to play.
Lipscomb remained scoreless out of the timeout for nearly five minutes and FGCU led 32-14 at the next media timeout. Neither team scored in the next three minutes of play, as the score stayed 32-14 in favor of FGCU at the under-eight media timeout.
The Bisons finally broke the over-seven-minute scoring drought when
Grant Asman got an easy layup on the inbound.
Neither team was finding much offense as Lipscomb trailed 36-18 at the final media timeout of the half.
Lipscomb continued to keep the Eagles scoreless out of the break and took advantage with a
Mateo Esmeraldo layup, cutting the FGCU lead 36-22 and forcing an Eagles' timeout with 1:54 to go in the half.
The Bisons held FGCU scoreless for the last five minutes of the half, and took the momentum into the locker room as Candelino drained a triple as the half expired.
Once down by 20, the Bisons shaved the FGCU lead 36-27 at the half.
Candelino picked up right where he left off with a triple as the first basket of the second half, shaving the deficit to six points. A few possessions later, Candelino stayed hot with another triple, further cutting the lead 41-36.
The Eagles, however, responded with seven-straight as Lipscomb's deficit grew back to 48-36 at the first media timeout of the second frame.
Lipscomb was scoreless for the next five minutes and FGCU took advantage, getting back out to a 52-36 lead at the 11:51 media timeout.
Grant Asman finally broke the six-minute scoreless drought with a triple as the Bisons trailed 56-39 with 10:11 left to play.
The squads traded triples before the under-eight media timeout as Lipscomb trailed 61-43 with 7:40 left in the matchup.
Lipscomb wasn't able to get in a flow offensively over the final minutes of the matchup, ultimately falling 77-53.
The Bisons finished the season 19-13 under first-year head coach Kevin Carroll with a 12-6 record in ASUN play.
