Bisons Fall Short At Tulane
11/29/2020 4:11:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – A trio of Bisons reached double figures on Sunday, but it wasn't enough as Tulane pulled out a 68-66 victory over Lipscomb in the championship game of the Tulane Classic at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Romeao Ferguson and Greg Jones led the team with 18 points and the Bisons had the ball on the game's final possession, but were unable to get a shot to fall. The loss moves the Purple and Gold to 1-1 after the opening weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was all Lipscomb in the early going as six different Bisons etched their names in the scoring column when Ferguson buried a turnaround jumper from the paint to give the visitors their largest lead of the game at 16-7 at the 11:39 mark.
Tulane (2-0) settled in with a 10-2 run to even the score at 22 before Ferguson scored five-straight points to put the Bisons back in front by seven with just over six minutes to play in the half.
Lipscomb managed to take a 34-33 into halftime, but it was a 16-minute stretch between halves that ultimately did the Bisons in.
From the 6:20 mark in the first half to 9:54 of the second, the purple and gold connected on just 4-of-23 attempts from the floor. The Green Wave used a 31-11 run to turn a 7-point deficit into a 53-40 lead.
But just as the Bison fans have come accustomed to, the Herd never backed down. Ferguson injected life into the squad with five straight points off feeds from Asadullah, and Lipscomb reeled off a 12-0 run to tie the score at 59. Asadullah finished a strong and-one play and Greg Jones bookeded the run with a triple and a pair of free throws.
The home team seemed to deliver down the stretch. A 9-2 surge by the Green Wave saw Lipscomb down 68-61 with 37 seconds left. Greg Jones hit from deep and then made 2-of-3 from the stripe to pull the Bisons back to within 68-66.
A strong defensive effort on the ensuing inbounds forced Tulane to call a timeout and then turn the ball to give the Bisons one final chance at a win or overtime.
Out of a timeout, Tulane's defense forced Greg Jones to heave a long triple and then R.J. McGee came up with a huge block on Asadullah's putback at the buzzer to seal Lipscomb's fate.
