VERMILLION, S.D. - The Lipscomb women's basketball team kicked off the 2020-21 season on Sunday afternoon with an 89-52 loss at South Dakota.
Guards Sydney Shelton, Taylor Clark, and Jordan Peete led the scoring for the Lady Bisons with nine points apiece. Peete was 3-4 from three-point range in her collegiate debut for the Purple and Gold.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Bisons (0-1) hung tight with the Coyotes early (1-2), trailing just 12-5 midway through the first quarter thanks to a season-opening three from sophomore point guard Casey Collier.
But that was as close as Lipscomb would get as South Dakota quickly built out their lead to 33-11 by the end of the period.
The Coyotes made their home at the free throw line as the lead increased in the second quarter. The Lady Bisons had their lowest scoring frame with just eight points.
Lipscomb came out on fire after the halftime break. Taylor Clark, Sydney Shelton, and Blythe Pearson each drained a triple in the first few minutes of the third quarter as the Purple and Gold outscored South Dakota 22-21 over the 10-minute stretch.
But it was too little too late as the Coyotes were able to hold onto their lead in the fourth to get their first win of the season.
