ATLANTA, Ga. - Highlighting the 2020 ASUN Conference Men's Golf season, the league office announced its top moments from the 2019-20 academic year among the ASUN's eight programs. The top moments cover accomplishments on and off the course.
This season, three ASUN Men's Golf teams earned team titles, while three student-athletes claimed individual medalist honors. One program broke ground on a brand new practice facility while several others had individuals set career low rounds. The season wrapped up with four teams ranking inside GolfStat Top-125 teams.
Top Moments from the 2019-20 ASUN Men's Golf Seasons
- Jacksonville's Thomas Thurloway earned his first Major Championship experience in July of 2019 qualifying with back-to-back rounds of 69 to play in the 148th Open Championship at the Royal Portrush.
- The Hatters broke ground on the Edinger Practice Facility, which will house new locker rooms, meeting space, hitting bays that are protected from weather and offices for the coaching staff.
- Liberty, Kennesaw State and North Alabama were honored by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) for its Outstanding Team Academic awards, three of 202 schools encompassing all levels of collegiate golf to earn a 3.0 GPA or above.
- The Flames started off the 2019-20 season strong carding five birdies during the closing three holes to claim the program's 30th NCAA Division I team title, winning the Island Resort Collegiate Invitational with a nine-under par 855 on Sept. 2.
- On Sept. 10, the Dolphins began the career of new Head Coach Jamey Salmon in style, as they closed out a four-stroke gap and ran away from the field to claim the team title at the Golfweek Program Championship winning with a 12-under par 828.
- Lipscomb's Nolan Ray came out ahead of the field in the Bisons first tournament of the season to claim his first career individual title with a nine-under par 207 at the Lone Star Invitational on Sept. 17.
- On Sept. 24, North Florida claimed the Graeme McDowell Invitational, marking the fourth-consecutive season with a team title, topping a field of 19 teams firing rounds of 288-276-288 for a 14-under par total of 850.
- The Bisons' senior grad transfer Nolan Ray captured his second individual title of the year at the Autotrader Collegiate Classic on Oct. 15, carding scores of 66-68-68 for a 14-under par 202 while tallying 19 birdies.
- The Ospreys' Cody Carroll fired a career-low seven-under par 65 in the final round of the Quail Valley Intercollegiate on Oct. 21. The round was bogey-free and included five birdies and an eagle.
- On Oct. 22, Liberty's Jonathan Yaun shot a four-under par 67 to finish in a four-way tie for first place at the 2019 Royal Oaks Intercollegiate. Yaun finished the event with an eight-under par 205 with rounds of 73-65-67.
- Kennesaw State's Brady Keran had the shot of the day on Oct. 26 as he walked to the par three 17th hole and proceeded to make a hole-in-one from 212 yards away at the Steelwood Country Club in the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational, his first hole-in-one of his collegiate career.
- FGCU's Tyler Carlson carded a 66 in the second-round at the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate, ranking the eighth-lowest single round in program history and the best round for any Eagle this season.
- On March 10, North Alabama's Jackson Wedgeworth tied Auburn's C.J. Easley with three holes to play before he birdied the 16th hole to win the Tiger Invitational with a nine-under par 207, earning his second individual title in the program's D-I era.
- The ASUN had two Men's Golf teams finish inside the top-40 teams in the country in the final Golfstat rankings in Liberty (32) and North Florida (37). Lipscomb (89) and Jacksonville (124) also ranked inside the top-125.
- In April, Liberty's Jonathan Yaun and Kieran Vincent were named to the PING All-Region East Team while Lipscomb's Nolan Ray was named to the PING All-Region Southeast Team before the trio were named to the PING All-America honorable mention team.
