NASHVILLE – Behind Parker Hazen's career night, the Lipscomb men's basketball team walked out of Allen Arena Saturday night with a 71-56 victory over Florida Gulf Coast to earn a weekend split.
The win improved the Bisons to 10-8 overall and 5-3 in ASUN Conference action, while the Eagles fell to 6-5 and 1-3.
Hazen scored a career high 20 points after going 11-of-14 from the free throw line. He also snagged six rebounds and blocked a career high three shots in 29 minutes off the bench.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With just under seven minutes to play, the Bisons found themselves leading 53-52 after a make from FGCU's Cyrus Largie. From that point on, it was all Lipscomb.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from KJ Johnson and Romeao Ferguson sparked an 18-0 run from the purple and gold and the defense held the Eagles to an 0-for-12 stretch before Largie's two makes in the final minute.
The Bisons defense stifled FGCU all night, limiting them to 32.9 percent shooting, while blocking a season high nine shots and swiping five steals.
It was the most blocks by Lipscomb in a game since also swatting nine against North Alabama on Feb. 2, 2019.
It took a bit before either team could really get going offensively, but the Bisons had seven players score in the first half, led by eight from Johnson and Hazen.
Lipscomb took a 35-26 lead into intermission after a 7-0 run that was capped by Will Pruitt's triple in the final seconds.
FGCU battled back in the second half after going down 11 early in the period, and eventually pulled even on two occasions, the last a 48-48 tie with 9:19 to play. Ahsan Asadullah's layup and a 3-pointer from Jake Wolfe set the stage for the Bisons down the stretch.
