Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Mark McGee

Volleyball suffers first loss on road at UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It is seldom easy to do, but sometimes players and teams must take a hard look at themselves.

Such is the case for the Lipscomb volleyball squad. After sweeping UAB 3-0 Friday night at Allen Arena, the Bisons were swept Saturday night by the Blazers at Bartow Arena by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-20.

Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal gave much of the credit for his team's struggles to a much different UAB team than the one they faced in the first match.

"UAB served the ball well," Rosenthal said. "They moved the ball around more than they did against us in  the first match.

"They applied the pressure to us instead of us applying the pressure to them. We saw some things from them we didn't see in the first match."

It was the first loss of the season for the Bisons (3-1) and the first win for UAB (1-2).

"If you do this long enough you are going to see matches like this,"  Rosenthal said. "The tough part in some ways is we saw what was happening and we tried to change it, but we didn't do a very good job.

"We just struggled to get into a rhythm. We didn't play clean enough to challenge them. It is about discipline. When you are not playing well, you try to do too much."

Rosenthal didn't fault the effort of his team as he used 14 players at various times in the match.

UAB jumped out to the lead in the first two sets, but the Bisons opened set three with a 3-0 start. In each frame, however, UAB finished strong to take control of the match.

Senior Megan Kuper led the Bisons with seven kills. Sami Rubal and Lanie Wagner added six apiece.

Senior Alyssa Zwolensky scooped up 13 digs. Freshman Delany Dilfer recorded 16 of the team's 23 assists.

"It is about gamesmanship for me," Rosenthal said. "It is difficult for elite athletes to identify their deficiencies and what they need to work on to lessen those deficiencies.

"As an athlete you have to be honest about what you are doing and why you didn't play well. We have a talented team. We learned a lesson early in the season. We are moving on and going back to work to find ways to win."

NEXT UP
The Bisons hit the road for their first ASUN matches of the season next weekend against Liberty. They will play in Lynchburg, Virginia at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday (Feb. 6) and noon CT on Sunday (Feb. 7).
