Women's Tennis establishes Battle of the Boulevard dominance

NASHVILLE - Lipscomb women's tennis extended its winning streak Saturday night with a dominant 5-2 victory over Belmont at Whitworth Racquet Club. 

The win improves the Bisons to 3-0 on the season, giving them their best start in the program's NCAA era. It also marks the 8th-straight win over the Bruins dating back to 2014. 

"The girls played with a great amount of energy tonight from start to finish," head coach Jamie Aid said. "Belmont played us pretty close in singles, but our girls were able to step up in big points."

Despite a shakeup in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairings, it didn't take long for the purple and gold to take control of the match, winning all three games in doubles to grab the first point. 

Liza Diachenko and Maddox Bandy put a 6-3 victory in the book on court three before Sasha Dobranos and Perri Howard followed with a 6-4 decision on court two to clinch the point. The top dual still played out, despite already having doubles in hand, with Kate Popova and Emma Zakordoniec winning 7-6 (8-6) in a tiebreaker. 

Lipscomb's No. 2-5 singles all grabbed victories, including three in straight sets. 

On the fourth line, Dobranos rolled through her pairing with a 6-1, 6-0 win before Anja Trbeznik defeated Belmont's Erin Allen 6-4, 7-6(9-7) at the No. 3 slot. Trbeznik improved to a team-best 3-0 on the year in singles. 

Zakordoniec came from behind after dropping her first game to knock off Peyton Lee 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 and secure the match-clinching point. 

Belmont's took wins on courts one and six, sandwiching Diachenko's 6-1, 6-4 victory over Terra Sheldon on the 5th line. 

Through three matches, Lipscomb is 13-4 as a squad in singles (.765) and 6-2 in doubles (.750). 

"It was really fun to see this group back on the court competing," Aid said. "Next week we have a very challenging week playing very good ETSU and Vanderbilt teams."

UP NEXT
The Bisons close out their 4-match homestand to open the 2021 season next weekend when ETSU visits Whitworth. The match is set for Friday (Feb. 5) at 7 p.m. They then travel across town to Vanderbilt on Saturday (Feb. 6) for a 1 p.m. showdown.
