Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Kirk Downs

Volleyball sweeps North Alabama for sixth straight win

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb volleyball had to go to extra points Thursday night, but it only needed three sets to take down North Alabama and extend the team's winning streak to six games.

The Bisons won by scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 37-35 to earn their fourth sweep of the season. The win improved them to 9-8 overall and 6-1 in ASUN league play.

"I thought tonight was a great test and ultimately we found a way to win," head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. "At times it felt like things just wouldn't go our way as we were battling more than just a hungry UNA team. Credit to them for putting up a heck of a fight.

"For us, we had to call on a bunch of different people and it was fun to see the spirit of Lipscomb volleyball. To get a road win is tremendous. I am incredibly proud and the team should be proud as well."

Meg Mersman led the team with 10 kills and four blocks. She's now reached double-digits in four of her last six outings. Kamryn Bacus and Logan Gish each added nine kills, while Addi Pelham chipped in eight to go along with her four blocks. Fellow freshman Anna Aubele recorded seven kills and hit a team high .455 clip.

Delaney Dilfer set the tempo for the purple and gold with 39 of the team' 46 assists, while adding seven digs, three blocks, three kills and an ace. Libero Delaney Smith paced the team with nine digs, while Gish also added seven.

Trailing 10-9 in the first set, Aubele spiked a ball at the net to spark a 7-1 run and put the Bisons up for good. Aubele and Baucs combined for nine kills in the frame, including the last four to get the set victory, 25-21. The Bisons hit .346 in the opening stanza behind 14 kills and 12 assists.

In the second set, the Bisons raced out to a 10-6 lead out of the gate before UNA battled back later in the set with a 5-0 run to put Lipscomb behind 19-16. After a timeout, the visiting Bisons responded with a 4-0 run that saw kills from Mersman and Bacus before the duo teamed up to stuff the Lions at the net. After trading points to get to 23 all, Aubele put down her only kill of the set and followed with a set-clinching block alongside Dilfer. The Bisons won 25-23 despite hitting just .094.

The third and final set saw Lipscomb fight from behind and battle to extra points to get the road victory. Lipscomb trailed for much of the first half of the set, before grabbing its first lead at 13-12. Following a run from UNA to put the Bisons in a 21-16 hole the energy changed. Mersman began hammering the Lions block with three kills in a 7-2 run that evened the score at 23.

UNA then got a kill from Katy Floyd to force set point, but Gish responded with a kill and Libby Steinhart dropped in an ace to give the Bisons their first of their eight set points. Lipscomb could never get back-to-back points until staving off a 35-34 deficit and winning the final three points to get the victory, 37-35. It was the longest set for the purple and gold since at least the 2014 season.

"The way we battled in the third set defensively was awesome to see," Rosenthal said. "The girls had to battle back through some situations. Spencer playing in the front row and Addi playing the back row did a great job.

"Every person on this team helped our team win tonight. Not just the ones on the court, but I could feel it from the bench and from the coaches. We all were pulling in the same direction and as a coach that is what you love to see."

QUICK SERVES

UP NEXT
The Bisons make the trip to Jacksonville, Alabama to face Jacksonville State on Friday at 6 p.m. It will feature a match of the top two teams in the ASUN West Division as the Bisons have a slight half-game lead.

"Jacksonville State should be a fun match," Rosenthal said. "They don't make a lot of errors and force you to play clean, but I love the way we are playing right now. I love what this group continues to do and am excited to see them compete again tomorrow."
