Volleyball suffers setback at JSU to snap win streak

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb volleyball saw its six-match winning streak come to an end Friday evening with a 3-0 setback (25-21, 25-15, 25-21) at Jacksonville State in what was a battle of the top two teams in the ASUN West Division.

"We have to give credit to Jacksonville State, I thought they played an extremely clean match," head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. "We knew coming in that they were a roster filled with seniors and super seniors who have played together for a long time.

"Sometimes being simple and being clean really puts pressure on the other side. Unfortunately, tonight we got beat and they played better than we did. This is still a great opportunity for us as everything we want is still in front of us. This is one of those teaching moments where we go back to work."

Addie Pelham led the Bisons (9-9, 6-2 ASUN) with 11 kills in the contest, while Delaney Dilfer posted 28 assists. Meg Mersman and Pelham blocked a team-high three balls and Alex Spencer paced the squad with six digs.

JSU (16-4, 6-1) scored the first three points of the first set and eventually led 6-1 before the Bisons got a pair of kills and a block from Mersman to spark a 3-1 spurt. After back-to-back slams from Pelham pulled Lipscomb to within two, the Gamecocks stretched their lead back out to six. Pelham and Anna Aubele registered consecutive kills and got the Bisons to within 21-19, but JSU closed the frame on a 4-2 run.

Trailing 19-10 in the second set, the purple and gold reeled off three straight points and then added a kill from Dilfer to trim the deficit to 20-14. JSU, however, took advantage of four consecutive attack errors from the Bisons before Addie Halverson closed the set for JSU, 25-15.

"I thought they did a nice job attacking to draw our middles in and then they were able to use their right side quite effectively, even though we made some changes throughout the match to slow her down," Rosenthal said.

With their backs against the wall, the Bisons built a 12-6 lead out of the gate after a pair of kills from Mersman and Caroline Stogner. After another Stogner slam put Lipscomb in front 18-11, the home standing Gamecocks got back-to-back kills from Halverson and an ace from Katie Montgomery to ignite a 14-3 run to overtake the Bisons and win the final frame 25-21 in a pivotal ASUN match.

"We did have a lot of good lessons tonight too. I thought our fight in set three and our change of effort was really good," Rosenthal said. "After being inconsistent in the first two sets, I asked the girls for more from them and they responded.

"But we have to do a better job of executing at the end of set three. Pour execution leads to more pressure and that pressure is a manor of the environment they have built there. This is unfortunately one of those things where we have to find a way."

The Bisons were outhit .358 to .211 and had just 38 kills in 114 attacks compared to 53 kills in 106 swings for JSU. The Gamecocks put three players in double-digit kills, led by Lena Kindermann's 18. All four of them hit .360 or higher.

"This is a by-product of what the ASUN is, to be in matches where the environment is special and the teams are tough," Rosenthal said. "This conference is really doing some special stuff and we have to find ways to battle through and get to the next level.

"I will continue to believe in this team and its abilities and our coaching staff will do a great job of preparation. It is exciting to have a group that is hungry and excited to get back to work in getting better every day."

UP NEXT
The Bisons continue their 8-match road swing next weekend with three matches in Jacksonville. Lipscomb will venture to UNF Arena for another ASUN Conference crossover weekend, where they will face Kennesaw State, Stetson and North Florida.

"We have a couple days off here because of playing Thursday and Friday and we will utilize that to get our minds and bodies right before going into another big weekend," Rosenthal said. "A three-match week will be tough, and we know that to be true after hosting that first crossover weekend, but our girls will be ready."
