Volleyball falls in straight sets to Kennesaw State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Lipscomb volleyball fell to Kennesaw State Friday afternoon in straight sets (17-25, 22-25, 19-25) in ASUN crossover action at UNF Arena.

The Bisons fall to 9-10 overall and 6-2 in league play, while the Owls improved to 12-8 and 6-3.

"We have to execute better in pivotal points, whether ahead, behind, or tied," head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. "We cannot rely on hope. I will not waiver on my thoughts that this team's ability is off the chart, but as a whole we have to find a way or make a way to execute."

In set one, Kennesaw State hit .423 with 14 kills and three errors, while the Bisons attacked just .148 with 10 kills and six miscues. Lipscomb fell behind 6-1 to open the frame and eventually pulled to within two, but the Owls stretched their lead to eight and never looked back.

Set two looked like KSU would jump out to a large lead again when the Owls led 11-5, but Lipscomb was able to rally with two kills each from Logan Gish and Kat Lowry, a single kill from Meg Mersman and Delaney Dilfer and an ace from Libby Steinhart to pull the Bisons back to within two at 20-18. However, KSU responded and the Bisons were unable to mount another comeback in the set after getting just nine kills.

Gish put down back-to-back aces early in the third frame to spark a 6-0 run from the purple and gold as they built a 7-3 advantage, but the Owls responded with a 10-2 run to get back on top and set the stage for a back-and-forth frame. Delaney Smith gave Lipscomb the lead back with consecutive aces at 14-13 before a 6-0 run from the Owls gave them a 20-15 lead. Addi Pelham tried to get the offense going with a pair of kills, but Kennesaw State finished off the frame, 25-19, after outhitting the Bisons .385 to .103.

"This team will make it happen," Rosenthal said. "I have no doubt, right now we are learning what it will take to make it 'US vs THEM'.

"I believe in this group and while it's not best feeling in the world right now, these are the hard growth moments that will make us better in the end."

UP NEXT
The Bisons are back on the court at 10 a.m. CT Saturday to take on the Stetson Hatters in crossover weekend action.

"It's a short turnaround, but in a lot of ways it's an awesome opportunity to move forward quicker and ultimately that's what we have to do," Rosenthal said.
