
Mersman's career effort leads volleyball in crossover win over Stetson

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Meg Mersman notched career-highs in kills, total blocks and solo blocks to lead the Lipscomb volleyball squad past Stetson, 3-1, Saturday morning in UNF Arena in ASUN crossover action.
After dropping the opening set, Lipscomb took down the Hatters 23-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-12 to break a two-match slide.
Defensively, the Bisons (10-10, 7-3 ASUN) were strong at the net, holding Stetson to a .101 hitting percentage with 14.0 team blocks. Mersman recorded 9.0 blocks, including 4.0 solo, and is currently averaging a team-best 0.96 per set. The Greenback, Tennessee native also finished with a match-high 17 kills and 23.5 total points.
Caroline Stogner finished with 13 kills, while Logan Gish and Addi Pelham added nine and seven kills, respectively. Stogner set season highs in kills and attacks (37) in her second start as a Bison, while Pelham set a career high with 6.0 blocks. Kathleen Lowry was big on both sides of the net once again with six kills, a .417 hitting percentage and 4.0 blocks.
Delaney Dilfer registered 47 assists, while four Bisons reached double figures in digs, led by Delaney Smith's 19. Freshman Libby Steinhart had her best game as a Bisons with a career high 11 digs and five aces.
Lipscomb got off to a slower start in the opening frame, hitting .179 as a team. After leading 4-2 early, the Hatters scored three straight to take control and they led until Steinhart's ace evened the score at 15. Stetson used a 7-2 run to build a five-point advantage, but Lipscomb got back-to-back kills from Pelham to help pull them to within 23-22. The Hatters then got two of the next three points to take the first set 25-23.
Hitting .333 and recording 18 assists on 18 kills, the Bisons found a way to win a second set that featured 14 ties and seven lead changes between the teams. Lipscomb held the largest lead in the frame at three points after another kill from Pelham and ace from Steinhart. The teams traded points all the way to 24-24 when Pelham and Lowry blocked a ball and the Bisons won on the next serve. Stogner found her groove in the frame torching the Hatters with seven kills behind a .538 hitting percentage.
It was back-and-forth to begin the third set before a 7-1 run from the Bisons gave Lipscomb the 18-10 advantage. Gish closed out the set 25-18 with her second kill of the frame. The Bisons hit just .171 in the set, but held the Hatters to .071 and got multiple kills from five players, led by Mersman's four.
After Stetson took the first point in the fourth set, it was all Bisons after responding with a 6-0 run that saw a pair of kills, a block and an ace. Mersman powered Lipscomb with five kills and four blocks in the set, ultimately leading the purple and gold to a resounding 25-12 win with 6.0 team blocks.
