THE SHORT STORY: The Bisons fought back from a 1-0 deficit with thrilling goals at the end of regulation and in overtime for a 2-1 victory over FGCU on Saturday night.
GOAL SUMMARY:
- FGCU opened scoring with a 41' minute strike for a 1-0 lead.
- Scott Gulden tied the match 1-1 with two seconds left in regulation.
- Alejandro Lopez netted the game-winner in the 99' minute to secure the 2-1 Bisons victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a back-and-forth first portion of the match, FGCU found a go-ahead strike in the 42' minute. O'Vonte Mullings scored his sixth goal of the season to put the Eagles up 1-0 just before the halftime break.
In the 58' minute,
Tyrese Spicer nearly netted one when he put a right-footed shot just wide of frame.
The Bisons continued to challenge the FGCU back line and got good looks on frame but were missing the finishing piece. In the 76' minute, Lipscomb landed a couple of impressive shots on frame, but the Eagles' defense was up to the task.
After an FGCU player was issued a second yellow card, resulting in a red card in the 79' minute, Lipscomb found new life. The Bisons jumped on the opportunity and kept possession for the final minutes of regulation.
Just when it seemed like the Bisons would run out of time to find the equalizer,
Scott Gulden put a left-footed shot to the upper left corner of the net from a nearly impossible angle with two seconds on the clock, putting the Bisons right back in the match.
After the last-second game-tying goal, time would expire, sending the match to a golden-goal overtime period.
Nearing the end of the overtime period, the Bisons earned a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
Luca Naumann stood over the ball and nearly curled the free kick in the upper right corner. The ball clanged off the post, but Lopez was there to knock in the rebound for his first goal on the season and the 2-1 victory.
