Volleyball falls in four sets at North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Lipscomb volleyball team lost 3-1 to North Florida Sunday night in Jacksonville after dropping the last two sets.

The Bisons (10-11, 7-4 ASUN) remain second in the ASUN West division with five regular season matches remaining. UNF stands second place in the East division after improving to 20-3 overall and 9-2 in league play. They are the first team to 20 wins in the conference this season.

"The UNF match is one that hopefully we can learn some pretty valuable lessons from, I thought it was a hard-fought battle on both sides," head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. "Ultimately, the difference in sets three and four was our passing.

"It's something we know and we can go back to work on. That's going to happen in tight matches. You have to be able to execute off of first contact and, as hard as it is to say that now, you can see our production offensively dropped fairly dramatically. A big piece of that is just handling the ball well and our serve-receive, so credit to them (UNF)."

Caroline Stogner led a trio of Bisons in double-digits with 13 kills, matching her season high after also getting 13 in Saturday's win over Stetson. Logan Gish recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs, while Addi Pelham recorded 10 kills and hit a career high .533 on 15 attacks.

Delaney Dilfer totaled 40 assists and six digs, while libero Delaney Smith finished with a team high 16 digs and a career high five assists.

"I thought defensively we made some nice adjustments and I thought distribution of our attacking was great, too," Rosenthal said. "And overall, I thought our hitting percentage was good. Those numbers did drop pretty good in sets three and four. We would go from 16 and 17 kills down to 10 and 12.

"It was a great match, one that we'd obviously like to have a different outcome, but at the same time, I thought this weekend as a whole we took some steps forward," Rosenthal said. "I think the battle that we saw tonight and last night was really good for us  and I think it's important, we can't stop moving forward at this point."

The Ospreys nearly led the entire opening set after winning the first two points before building an 11-4 advantage. After pushing that lead to eight and forcing both Lipscomb timeouts, the Bisons attack got rolling. A four-point run charged the purple and gold and Pelham punished three straight kills to extend the run to 11-4 and trim UNF's lead to just 22-21. Following another Pelham kill and an Osprey ace, the home team got the last two points to win 25-23 in the opening frame.

In what was one of the most entertaining sets of the season for the Bisons, Lipscomb and North Florida saw 16 ties and six lead changes in the second set. Back-to-back kills from Gish and Mersman helped the purple and gold take an early 4-0 lead out of the gate before UNF battled back to tie it at 8-8. The sides traded points, with neither winning more than two consecutive at any time, until a kill from Stogner made it 23-22 in Lipscomb's favor.

Following a timeout, both teams recorded a service error before an attacking error from the Ospreys gave the Bisons a 25-23 set two win. Pelham hit .571 in the frame as she and Stogner led the team with five kills each in the set. The Bisons had 17 kills as a team and outhit UNF .268 to .094.

After battling to a 4-4 tie early in the third, UNF put together runs of 9-2 and 6-0 to go in front 22-11. The Bisons tried to cut into the deficit with kills from Kathleen Lowry, Mersman and a pair from Stogner, but the home team took the frame 25-17. UNF outhit Lipscomb .484 to .207 with 18 kills to 10.

The fourth stanza had the Bisons leading 6-2 after Gish recorded a pair of aces from the service line. UNF tied things four different times until grabbing the lead for good at 12-11. A 5-0 run from the Ospreys extended the lead before the Bisons were able to get to within three at 21-18.

However, the home team won the next four points to secure their 20th win of the season. UNF hit .542 in the frame with 15 kills and just two errors on 24 attacks.

"Unfortunately, you're going to have nights where you struggle to create that pressure, so it comes down to making the plays, and in crucial moments," Rosenthal said. "I don't want us to hang our heads, I think we have to do a better job passing. We have to be able to take that information and really be able to capitalize on it.

"The message the rest of the week here is, what are we going to do about it? We get a couple days rest here and then we'll go back at it again.  I've said it numerous times, I think this team is really close, even in a tough loss like this, it's really not a whole lot. As we get ready for the next half of the season, we've got to find ways to continue to build on what I think is going to be a really fun ending to the season for us as we put these things together."

UP NEXT
The Bisons stay on the road this week for just a single match, travelling to Central Arkansas at 6 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 29). It will be the first-ever trip for Lipscomb to Conway, Arkansas to face the Sugar Bears.

"I'm excited about this group, I believe in this group 100%. And I know this group is capable of winning an ASUN championship," Rosenthal said. "I recognize that outsiders might take a look at that and say, 'Well okay, how are you going to do it?'

"After losing to FGCU, North Florida, Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State, I don't think we have quite seen our best yet against those opponents."
