Volleyball earns road sweep at Central Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. – Lipscomb volleyball earned an all-important road sweep Friday night, defeating Central Arkansas by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-22, in ASUN Conference action at the Price Center.
The win improved the Bisons to 11-11 overall and 8-4 in league play.

"I thought tonight was a great night and a great all-around effort," head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. "I was really impressed with our serving tonight. Sometimes going into a different size gym can mess with that, but I thought we were able to jump on them early and put that pressure on them."

Kamryn Bacus powered the offense for Lipscomb with 11 kills, while hitting .348 on 23 swings. Meg Mersman and Logan Gish added nine kills each, while Kathleen Lowry hit a team high .778 after landing seven of her nine attacks.
Delaney Dilfer contributed 37 assists and six digs, while Delaney Smith collected a team high 14 digs.

"Defensively, our effort throughout the night kept getting better and better," Rosenthal. "Our distribution was fantastic and to hit near a .350 clip was impressive.

"Our middle play was really good as well. Kat Lowry hitting close to .800, but more than anything her presence on the court was impressive. We saw some things tonight we hadn't seen all year."

The Sugar Bears jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first set before two errors and a Dilfer ace pulled the Bisons even. A two-point advantage quickly ballooned to eight (22-14) following a 9-3 run from Lipscomb where Mersman put down four kills. After a late run from UCA, Gish and Mersman teamed up for the set-clinching block to win 25-21.

Mersman and Gish each had five kills in the set as the Bisons hit .306 as a team.

Set two saw UCA lead throughout the first portion of the frame before back-to-back kills from Bacus gave the Bisons a lead for good. Lowry spearheaded the attack late with four-of-five points in a run that included back-to-back aces from the Rockford, Illinois native to extend the advantage. Libby Steinhart landed the final swing to secure a 25-19 win in set two.

Lipscomb hit .438 as a squad with Bacus leading the way with six kills, while Dilfer assisted on 13-of-16 team kills.

In the third frame, five Bisons recorded multiple kills, with Addi Pelham, Bacus and Mersman each getting three. After trading leads in the first few points, Lipscomb continued with its steady attack and built the advantage to as many as seven at 19-12 following an ace from Ashleigh Albert and a kill from Mersman.

UCA made a late 10-2 run to regain the lead at 22-21 over the Bisons, but a kill from Lowry and an ace from Smith led a 4-0 match-clinching run to give the Bisons a 25-22 win.

"A big play down the stretch was a short serve from Smitty (Delaney Smith) when she saw Central Arkansas was kind of out of sorts coming out of a timeout," Rosenthal said. "She got the ball and put it right down the middle for an ace. It was a heads up play and one that we needed in the moment. It was a gutsy play, but that's just who she is."
