Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball falls in five sets to Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. – Lipscomb volleyball dropped a heartbreaker on the road Friday night, falling in five sets to Eastern Kentucky in ASUN Conference action at McBrayer Arena.

The loss drops the Bisons to 11-12 overall and 8-5 in league play.

"Tonight's a tough example that all of us know too well, it's not over until it's over and unfortunately we let our foot off the gas," head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. "We have to be better. And what I mean is we have to play harder. I just didn't believe we played as hard as we could have in sets three, four and five.

"And unfortunately that reared its ugly head, so you have to credit EKU for never stopping in that battle. As hard as it is and late in season, we've got to take this and learn from it. I still think there's plenty of time for it, but that time is running out though."

Lipscomb came out of the gate on fire against EKU, hitting .375 and winning the first two sets 25-15 and 25-21. The last three frames were a different story.

EKU outhit the Bisons in each set and totaled just eight combined attack errors to down the purple and gold 25-20, 25-23 and 15-8 to get the victory.

"We earned those first two sets. I thought our serving really created some issues for them. I thought we got back into a rhythm, especially late in the sets. We just didn't execute. Not to say we weren't working, I just think that at some point we have to go all out."

Sophomore middle Meg Mersman led four Bisons in double-figure kills with 14 on a .414 hitting percentage. She also powered the team from the defensive side with a team-high six blocks for 17.0 total points.

Freshman Addi Pelham added 13 kills on a team-high 35 attacks and added four blocks, while Kamryn Bacus chipped in 12.

Senior Logan Gish collected her fourth double-double of the season behind 11 kills and a season-high matching 14 digs.

"I thought we got some pretty good production from Meg Mersman and it was at times where we really needed something," Rosenthal said. "Addi had a great start to the night and then they made some adjustments with our block and we didn't do enough to counter that."

Setter Delaney Dilfer recorded 50 assists, seven kills, three blocks and three digs. Delaney Smith led the back row with a team-high 20 digs and matched her career high with five service aces.

"I think the challenge that we have right now is getting comfortable or getting somewhat content in situations," Rosenthal said. "And, unfortunately, it got the best of us. I thought defensively, we did a nice job.

"I think sometimes just playing just within yourself is the hardest thing to do and it allows everybody else to do their job. So the tricky part is we've got to find a way and turn the page for tomorrow. The great part is I have no doubt about this talent on this team. We can't get content. We've got to fight through this and take this lesson."

NOTES
  • The Bisons were outhit .284 to .254 by the Colonels with 26 attack errors and a season-high 69 total kills.
  • The team collected 10.0 total blocks, the fifth time this season they were in double figures.
  • Kathleen Lowry and Anna Aubele added five kills each off the bench. Lowry hit .714 on seven swings, while Aubele swung .400.
  • Lipscomb totaled 11 aces off the service line. Smith led the way with five, while Gish added three and Ashleigh Albert two.

  • The team matched its season high with 60 total assists. Both times have come against EKU.
"We saw some new people in Libby and Alby and Jade. I thought for the majority of the match they did a fantastic job, so I am extremely proud of that, but we'll go back to work."

UP NEXT
Lipscomb will be back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday against Bellarmine in Louisville, Kentucky.

"We've got to find a way to kind of dig in and go after it tomorrow," Rosenthal said. "I believe in these girls, I believe in this team and I believe in the coaching staff.

"It's hard, this is our fourth week on the road and that doesn't make it any easier."
