Ognacevic drops 30, Bisons score 105 in season-opening victory over Birmingham-Southern

NASHVILLE – Behind four players in double-figures, the Lipscomb men's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season with a 105-98 victory over Birmingham-Southern Tuesday night inside Allen Arena.
 
The star of the night for the Bisons was freshman transfer Jacob Ognacevic. The Sheboygan, Wisconsin native sank 17-of-18 at the line and poured in career high 30 points to go along with seven rebounds.
 
Ahsan Asadullah grabbed a double-double with 17 points and a team-high 12 boards to go along with three steals and three blocks.  KJ Johnson added 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Tommy Murr chipped in 11.
 
The Bisons shot 45.2 percent from the field (33-of-73) and dominated at the free throw line, making a whopping 31-of-37 attempts (83.8%). It marked the most makes from the charity stripe in a game since hitting 32 against FGCU in the ASUN Championship game on March 4, 2018.
 
 
FIRST HALF
  • Senior Parker Hazen got the night started with a three-pointer from the right wing before Johnson got the crowd on their feet with back-to-back triples of his own to give Lipscomb a 13-6 lead at the first media timeout.
  • Leading 28-26 with just under nine minutes to play in the half, Lipscomb used an 8-0 run to stretch its advantage to 10 after back-to-back makes from Johnson and Will Pruitt in the paint.
  • BSC's duo of Christian Stewart and Martise Jackson combined for 11 points over the last six minutes to help the Panthers close the half on a 20-11 run.
  • Lipscomb's Ognacevic and Pruitt scored 12 of the final 14 points for the Bisons, including eight at the charity stripe, to make it a 50-50 game at the break.
  • Lipscomb shot 47.1 percent from the floor (16-of-34) and drained 15-of-18 (83.3%) at the line.
  • Ognacevic led all scorers at the break with 12 points, while Asadullah added 10.
 
 
SECOND HALF
  • It was a back-and-forth affair early in the second half until Asadullah went down in pain and exited the game. The Panthers used an 11-0 run to put Lipscomb in a 65-57 hole at the 14:03 mark.
  • Birmingham-Southern extended the lead to nine a couple of minutes later before the purple and gold started to flex its muscles.
  • Freshman Quincy Clark scored on a layup to spark a 16-0 run for the Bisons, highlighted by seven straight points from Tommy Murr, and put them back in front 75-68.
  • After the Panthers got it back to within three, Ognacevic and Clark buried back-to-back triples to cap an 8-0 run and make it a 90-79 Lipscomb lead.
  • Ognacevic scored six points over the final 4:22 to keep the Panthers at bay and help the Bisons get the 105-98 victory.
  • Ognacevic paced the way in the second half with 18 points (9-of-9 FT), while Asadullah chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.
  • The Bisons shot 17-of-39 from the floor for a 43.6-percent clip and drained 16-of-19 at the free throw line (84.2%), while hitting five triples.
 

GAME NOTES
  • The Bisons have now scored 100+ points in two of three season openers under head coach Lennie Acuff. They have also scored 90+ in a season opener for the fifth time in six years and the ninth time in 12 years.
  • Ognacevic's 30 points were the most by a Bison since Asadullah dropped 40 against FGCU in the first round of the ASUN Championship on March 3, 2020.
  • Asadullah logged the 21st double-double of his career.
  • Pruitt finished the night with nine points and a career high five assists. He recorded four assists on the first five field goal makes of the game. He also added three boards and a pair of steals.
  • Clark scored eight points in his collegiate debut on 2-of-4 shooting in 16 minutes.
  • Senior Greg Jones added seven points and four rebounds, while Hazen chipped in six points and five boards.
  • Freshman Trae Benham made his collegiate debut and grabbed two rebounds in two minutes of action.
  • Ognacevic drew 14 of the 27 fouls against Birmingham-Southern. No other player drew more than three.
  • Lipscomb hit triple digits in a game for the 10th time since the 2015-16 season.
 

UP NEXT
Lipscomb will hit the road this weekend for the Rising Coaches Classic in Charleston, South Carolina. The Bisons will battle for three consecutive days against College of Charleston (Friday), South Carolina State (Saturday) and Loyola Maryland (Sunday.)
 
Friday's match against CofC will be the only game this weekend that will be live streamed.
