Volleyball comes from behind to down Jacksonville State in 5-set thriller

NASHVILLE – After dropping the first two games, the Lipscomb volleyball team bounced back to win the final three in dramatic fashion to knock off Jacksonville State, 3-2, in the final match of the regular season. They won by scores of 19-25, 19-25, 25-22, 26-24 and 15-8.

The Bisons (14-12, 11-5) finish as the No. 2 seed in the ASUN West Division, while JSU falls to 23-6 overall and 13-1 in league play. The Gamecocks will be the No. 1 seed in the West in next week's ASUN Championship.

Kamryn Bacus finished with a match-high 17 kills on .316 hitting, while Meg Mersman swung .480 with 14 kills and five blocks.

Logan Gish picked up her fifth double-double of the year with 11 kills and 12 digs, and Anna Auble added 10 kills and five blocks.

Delaney Dilfer recorded 51 assists, nine digs and was terrific off the service line with a career high five aces. Delaney Smith matched Gish with a team-high 12 digs on the back row.

Five seniors - Logan Gish, Lanie Wagner, Alex Spencer, Garrett Joiner and Kat Lowry - played the last match of their careers in Allen Arean with the win. 
 
SET 1
After the teams traded points early on, the Bisons used a 7-2 run to go up 12-9. The Gamecocks got six kills from Kylee Quigley and changed the momentum with a 14-3 run before getting to 25 first. Gish, Mersman and Addi Pelham each had three kills, but the Bisons only hit .081 in the frame.
 
SET 2
JSU took a 2-1 lead out of the gate and never looked back as they went on to win 25-19.. They hit .375 as a team, while holding the Bisons to a .138 clip. Aubele led the team with four kills on .375 hitting and added two blocks in the frame.
 
SET 3
Set three was the closes set of the match from beginning to end as the sides tied 12 different times. Lipscomb took a 17-14 lead after a block from Bacus and a kill from Mersman sparked a 3-0 lead. Back-to-back kills from Bacus later in the set made it 20-16, but the Gamecocks fought back to even it up at 21-21. Aubele got a big block down the stretch before a kill from Pelham made it set point. Gish then delivered the set-clinching block to win 25-22 and keep the match alive. Bacus led the way with five kills on a .364 clip, while Aubele added four kills.
 
SET 4
The Bisons broke open the frame midway through with a 5-0 run that included a kill and a block from Mersman to put Lipscomb on top 15-9. They kept a six-point lead until 23-17 when JSU reeled off six straight points to even the score, however, kills from Dilfer and Bacus sealed the 26-24 win for the purple and gold to send it to a fifth set. Bacus caught fire with seven kills, while Mersman hit an efficient 1.000 on five swings. Lipscomb outhit JSU .308 to .188 and blocked three balls.
 
SET 5
The purple and gold controlled the fifth frame from the first point. Gish bookended a 4-0 start with a kill and an ace before a kill from Bacus made it 10-3. JSU didn't quit and ran off four straight points, but the Bisons were too strong. Gish again came through with two big swings down the stretch to secure the 15-8 set win and 3-2 match victory. She hit .500 with four kills on six swings. As a team, the Bisons outhit JSU .562 to .167.
 
 
NOTES
  • Lipscomb improved to 2-3 in five-set matches this season. Their other win also came at home against Liberty on September 26.
  • The Bisons hit .228 in the win with 63 kills on 162 attacks.
  • Pelham added six kills off the bench.
  • Gish finished with three aces, while Alex Spencer added two.
  • Eight different Bisons registered a block and five recorded an ace.
 
UP NEXT
The Bisons get a couple days to rest up before opening the ASUN Championship at 3 p.m. CT on Thursday in Fort Myers, Florida. They will face the East's No. 3 North Florida Ospreys.
