Turnovers overshadow 65-percent shooting night in road defeat at Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb men's basketball went on the road and shot 64.4 percent from the floor, hit 10 three-pointers and dished 22 assists against Tennessee Tech. On most nights, that equals a recipe for victory.

So when you look at the box score and read the Bisons lost 88-77 to the Golden Eagles, a double-take is almost guaranteed.

The story of the game was Lipscomb simply could not hold onto the ball and could not get a stop on defense after halftime. The purple and gold coughed up the rock 22 times, leading to 24 points for Tech, and got outscored 52-36 in the second half.

Jacob Ognacevic was perfect for Lipscomb on offense with 24 points in 27 minutes. The Sheboygan, Wisconsin product finished 9-for-9 from the floor, including a 5-for-5 night beyond the arc.

Ahsan Asadullah, the two-time ASUN Player of the Week, flirted with a triple-double as he recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. However, he did turn the ball over a team-high seven times.

Parker Hazen and Greg Jones added 10 points each and combined to shoot 7-for-12 from the field.
 

FIRST HALF
  • It took nearly three minutes before points were put on the board, when Asadullah deposited a feed from Hazen to go up 2-0.
  • Despite a pair of early triples from Jones, TTU evened the score at 10 near the 12:30 mark.
  • Ognacevic then went to the other end and recorded a layup to jump-start a 13-0 run for the Bisons.
  • In the spurt, Tanner Shulman buried three consecutive 3-pointers before Hazen's layup put Lipscomb in front 23-10 with 9:22 left in the half.
  • After trading baskets the next few minutes, TTU used a 7-2 run to cut Lipscomb's lead to 37-30.
  • The Bisons took a 41-36 lead into the half after the Golden Eagles converted an and-one with two seconds on the clock.
  • Ognacevic scored 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting in the first half, while Asadullah recorded eight points, five rebounds and five assists.
  • The Bisons were lights out in the first 20 minutes, shooting 74% from the field after making 17-of-23 shots, including 7-of-11 from beyond the arc. They assisted on 13 of the 17 makes.
  • At one point, Lipscomb connected on 10 straight shot attempts, and 15-of-19.
  • The story of the half was 14 turnovers from the purple and gold on 37 possessions. Tech scored 12 points off those miscues.
 
SECOND HALF
  • The Bisons opened up the half on a 6-2 run to extend their advantage to 47-38 after makes from KJ Johnson, Will Pruitt and Hazen in the paint.
  • After the Golden Eagles managed to cut it back to two points, Ognacevic began to take over the game. The big man scored eight straight points for Lipscomb, including back-to-back threes.
  • Four free throws from Hazen and Johnson pushed it back to an 8-point lead with just under 10 minutes to play.
  • TTU then used an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to even the game at 63-63.
  • The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the night at 7:02 on a three from Shandon Goldman and Lipscomb never recovered.
  • Tennessee Tech ended the night on a 20-8 run as the Bisons continued to turn the ball over and never could get a stop when they needed it most.
  • Ognacevic poured in 14 points in the second half on 5-of-5 shooting with three treys.
  • Johnson and Hazen each scored six points, while Asadullah chipped in four and five boards.
  • The Bisons scored on 17 of their 32 possessions.
  • Lipscomb shot 54.5 percent from the floor (12-of-22), 75.0 percent from deep (3-of-4) and dished eight assists.
  • They turned it over eight more times, leading to 12 TTU points.
 
 GAME NOTES
  • Lipscomb went 29-of-45 from the floor, 10-of-15 from deep and 9-of-16 from the charity stripe.
  • The 64.4 percent clip was the highest by a Lipscomb team since shooting the exact same percentage in a home win over Navy on December 9, 2018.
  • The 66.7 percent mark from long distance was the highest by the Bisons since shooting the same against North Florida on January 25, 2020 (6-of-9).
  • Tanner Shulman came up with clutch baskets in the first half, going 3-for-3 from deep, to record nine points in 13 minutes.
  • KJ Johnson scored six points with four assists, two rebounds and three turnovers in 26 minutes.
  • Will Pruitt finished with four points, three assists and four turnovers.
  • The Bisons collected 22 assists on 29 field goal makes.
  • Lipscomb has hit 10+ threes in three games this season. Last year they reached that mark just seven outings.
