Bisons Fall in Season Opener at BYU

PROVO, Utah – BYU's length and three-point shooting proved too much for the Bisons to overcome as Lipscomb fell to the Cougars 81-58 on the road to open the 2021-2022 campaign. 
 
Blythe Pearson was the Bisons' leading scorer with 19 points, finishing just one point off her career high. She added a team-high five rebounds to her stat line and scored from behind the arc a career-high five times. Bella Vinson also scored in double-figures with 12 points in her collegiate debut followed by Jalyn Holcomb who contributed ten points. Maddie cook also brought down five rebounds in her first game in a Lipscomb uniform.  
 
The Bisons started the game hot, taking an early 9-0 lead thanks to three-straight triples from Pearson.  BYU then went on an 18-0 run to take its first lead of the night that would never be relinquished. The Cougars remained in control of things through the first quarter with a 22-13 lead after the first 10 minutes. 
 
Lipscomb was able to temporarily slow the BYU offense in the second quarter, holding the Cougars to just one of its first seven field goals. The Bisons stayed in striking distance for most of the second quarter, but BYU went on an 11-6 scoring run to finish the half with a 39-24 lead. 
 
The Bisons were unable to cut into the BYU lead in the second half as the Cougars drained eight triples in the final 20 minutes. Despite shooting 41 % from the three-point line, the Bisons fell 81-58 in its first game of the season.
 
HERD NOTES
  • BYU outshot the Bisons 40% to 32% from the floor as Lipscomb went 18-57. 
  • The Bisons were outrebounded 55-33 on the night.
  • The Purple and Gold forced 11 turnovers and swiped three steals. 
  • Casey Collier finished with six points and six assists while Kat Weakly added five and Jordan Peete chipped in four. Maddie Cook and Diana Saleh rounded out the scoring with a point a piece. 
  • Lipscomb finished with four blocks. Leading the way was Cook with two, followed by Pearson and Holcomb with one each. 
 
UP NEXT
The Bisons have a quick turnaround as they will be back in action tomorrow, November 10 at Utah. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. CT.
