Wood's Late Goal Lifts Bisons Over ETSU

NASHVILLE - A late goal from sophomore Hayes Wood gave the Lipscomb men's soccer team its third consecutive win to start the season as Lipscomb came away victorious over East Tennessee State, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.

The scoring started quickly with the Bisons grabbing the lead off a goal from Ryan Dougherty in the seventh minute of action. The goal came off a set-piece after Lipscomb drew a foul against ETSU just outside of the 18-yard box. After all the players got in their formation, Dougherty and Alejandro Lopez lined up for the free kick and it was Dougherty who ripped a shot though the wall of bodies and past the goalkeeper into the back of the net to put the Bisons in front, 1-0.

After 24 minutes of play, ETSU was able to capitalize on a counter-attack. Jared Leheta put one past Michael Sibley after receiving two passes, which knotted the match at 1-1 in the 31st minute and remained that way into halftime.

With time winding down in regulation and overtime looming, the Bisons were once again able to take advantage off a set-piece after earning their fifth corner kick of the match in the 87th minute. Instead of sending it directly into the box, Lipscomb elected to play the corner short and got the ball to the foot of Dougherty allowing him to send the ball into the box from a better angle. Dougherty's pass was delivered perfectly to a jumping Wood, who redirected the ball with a header for the game-winning goal.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH CHARLES MORROW

"Tough conditions. This is the coldest weather we've been in all spring, I imagine. Just to get the legs going in weather like this is difficult enough. We're super proud of the guys for fighting through and getting the result today and finding that second goal.

"I think we made the game a lot more difficult than it had to be. I was really impressed with our pressing and keeping them pinned-in in their defensive half. I just think our movement and our ideas have to be better in the attacking third, but we'll take the result and move on to the game on Wednesday against Marshall.

"Marshall will be a very tough opponent for us and I think they were picked to win Conference USA, so we know the challenge in front of us. We feel good being this early in the season and having the experience that we have, so we'll rest up and get ready for Marshall on Wednesday."
