Volleyball sweeps Kennesaw State on Senior Night in battle of ASUN's best

NASHVILLE – In a highly anticipated matchup pitting the league's top two teams against one another, Lipscomb volleyball put the ASUN Conference on notice with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-13, 27-25) of previously unbeaten Kennesaw State in Allen Arena Friday on Senior Night.

The Bisons honored their four seniors Megan Kuper, Sami Rubal, Ashley Maher and Alyssa Zwolensky in a special pregame ceremony that featured video messages from their families.

The win marked the 5th-straight sweep for the Bisons, who improved to 11-2 overall and 8-1 in ASUN action. The Owls dropped to 10-1 overall and in league play, but still hold a slight edge over Lipscomb in the ASUN North Division.

Freshman outside hitter Kam Bacus paced a balanced attack for the purple and gold with 10 kills on a team-high 31 attacks. Kuper, Rubal and Garrett Joiner added seven kills apiece, while Meg Mersman chipped in six.

Freshman Delaney Dilfer facilitated 34 of the team's 38 assists after getting back in the lineup as the starting setter.

Defensively, the Bisons were outstanding all night in putting pressure on the Owls with 40 digs and six blocks. Zwolensky led the squad with 13 digs while Rubal (4), Kuper (3) and Mersman (2) were all credited with multiple blocks.

SET ONE
After Joiner hammered three kills in Lipscomb's first five points, Rubal connected on her second of the night to spark a quick 4-0 run that led to a 9-4 lead for the Bisons. The Owls managed to pull to within two after a block, but had no answer for Lipscomb's game. Despite taking a 17-12 advantage following back-to-back kills from Rubal, the Bisons allowed KSU to get back in the set with a 5-1 run of its own. After trading points to knot the score at 23-23 and out of a timeout, Bacus put down her third kill of the set before a ball handling error gave the home team a 25-23 victory in set one.

SET TWO
Whatever momentum was grabbed by Lipscomb in the opening-set win, it was ratcheted up a notch in a second frame that was simply dominated by the Bisons. Kuper and Delaney Smith delivered a pair of service aces en route to a 7-1 run to start the action. Minutes later Kuper put down two of her three kills in the set to ignite another 9-2 run and eventually grab 11-point leads at 18-7 and 21-10. The Bisons clamped down on the Owls, limiting them to a -.033 hitting percentage with 10 errors. On the other side, Lipscomb committed only one error and swung .286 to get the 25-13 win and go up 2-0 in the match.

SET THREE
KSU erased any memory of the prior set to begin the third and fought its way back into the match, leading for all but two points until a block from Rubal and Kuper leveled the score at 12-12. The Owls looked like they were one their way to a set victory after a 5-1 run gave them a 20-15 lead over the Bisons. Bacus capped a 3-0 Lipscomb run with her fourth kill of the frame to pull to within two before KSU worked its way to set point at 24-22. Kuper and Rubal teamed up once again to fend off set point with a block, and help the Bisons score five of the final six points to complete the comeback and win 27-25 on Senior Night.

HERD NOTES
  • Nine of the team's 11 victories this season have come by-way of a sweep. Seven of those are against ASUN opponents.
  • Lipscomb held KSU to a season low .074 hitting percentage, marking just the second time in the last four years the Owls have hit below .100. The 27 errors forced were a season high for the Bisons.
  • It marked the fourth time this season the purple and gold have held an opponent to .100 or lower hitting.
  • The Bisons had 10 block assists, giving them their sixth match of the season with double-digit BA's.
  • Lipscomb has now defeated KSU in back-to-back meetings (both sweeps) after dropping the previous nine in the series.
