Volleyball takes control of ASUN, extends win streak with 3-1 victory over Kennesaw State

NASHVILLE – On Don Meyer Court for the final time in the regular season, the Lipscomb volleyball team emphatically asserted itself at the top of the ASUN Conference in a 3-1 victory (25-27, 25-19, 25-19, 25-14) over the Kennesaw State Owls Saturday night in Allen Arena.

With the win, the Bisons moved to 12-2 overall and 9-1 in league play. After entering the weekend undefeated, the Owls are now 10-2 this season overall and in ASUN action.

Lipscomb is now in control of its own destiny with two regular season matches remaining. Win both and the Bisons will claim their seventh ASUN regular season crown in program history.

Freshman Kamryn Bacus led Lipscomb in the match with a career high 19 kills and swung .349 from her outside hitter position. Senior Megan Kuper earned her fifth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs to go along with three blocks.

Senior Sami Rubal hit .526 from the middle and registered 12 kills on 19 attacks. Freshman Meg Mersman totaled 10 kills (.381) and a team-high five blocks. The duo in the middle ranks first and second in the ASUN in hitting percentage this season. They combined for a .450 clip in the finale with 22 kills and four errors on 40 combined swings.

Helping run the offense, Delaney Dilfer recorded a career high 45 assists. The freshman setter also tacked on eight digs, two blocks, four kills, a .571 hitting percentage and an ace. On the back row, seniors Alyssa Zwolensky and Ashley Maher combined for 25 digs, with the former leading the way with 17.

SET ONE
After a pair of early spikes, KSU jumped out to a 5-2 lead out of the gate. The Bisons then got kills from Garrett Joiner, Dilfer and Rubal to put together a 4-0 run and get back in front 7-6. A couple points later the purple and gold ran off a 6-1 spurt, capped by back-to-back slams from Kuper, to extend its lead to 15-9. In a battle of ASUN heavyweights, back-and-forth blows were expected as the Owls put together a 5-0 run of their own before eventually working the score back even at 18-18.
After trading points, the opening set seemed to be in hand for the Bisons after taking a 24-22 lead on another kill from Joiner, but Kennesaw State got three kills and an ace from 2-time ASUN first teamer Lauren Chastang to give the Owls the win. Seven different players recorded points in the set as the Bisons got outhit .302 to .174 in the frame.

SET TWO
After losing the first two points of the frame, Bacus connected on back-to-back swings to help the Bisons take an early 6-3 lead. Two kills from Kuper and another from Mersman sandwiched Ashley Maher's service ace to run the advantage to 12-6. Chastang and Emma Schurfranz capped a 5-0 KSU run to cut the lead to one, where it would stand a few points later. Bacus continued to dominate the set with three more kills in a 6-1 run to put the home team on top 23-17, and eventually leading to a 25-19 win. Bacus hit .714 in the frame with six kills on seven swings.

SET THREE
Freshman Delaney Smith got the scoring started with her second ace of the night before Mersman buried back-to-back sets from Dilfer to put Lipscomb in front 6-4. Bacus continued her torrid stretch as two kills from her and Rubal bookended another ace from Smith to give the Bisons a 13-8. The Owls would never get any closer than three the rest of the stanza after Lipscomb's defense kept them from stringing together runs. Kuper slammed the set shut 25-19 with her fifth kill in six attacks. Bacus added a team-high eight kills as the Bisons hit .370 in the frame with 21 kills and only four errors. KSU did not commit an error and hit .314 with just 11 kills.

SET FOUR
The fourth set was dominated in the middle for the Bisons as Rubal hit .714 with six kills on seven swings and Mersman swung .667 with four kills on seven attacks. Neither side could really get an advantage in the early going before Rubal put the Bisons in front 10-7 with a kill. She and Bacus then reeled off three kills in a 4-point run to stretch the margin to 14-9.

The big plays kept going in Lipscomb's favor as the home team closed the frame on a 15-5 run to get the 25-14 victory. The Bisons outhit the Owls .500 to .094 in the frame with 16 kills compared to nine for KSU.
