Volleyball earns 3rd-straight sweep with road victory at North Alabama

NASHVILLE – Outside hitters Megan Kuper and Kamryn Bacus combined for 23 kills Tuesday night as the Lipscomb volleyball team swept North Alabama 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-22) at Flowers Hall.
The win was the third in a row for the Bisons, who improved to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in ASUN Conference play.

It was a balanced offensive attack all night for Lipscomb as Kuper, Bacus, Sami Rubal, Meg Mersman and Lanie Wagner all had 7-plus kills in the match and as a team, the Bisons had 51 kills on 109 swings.

Brooke Phillips led the team with 32 assists before giving way to Delaney Dilfer, where she added 12 assists in the third set. The duo combined also combined for three kills and eight digs.

Defensively, the Bisons dug 46 balls and held North Alabama (1-7, 1-6) to .169 hitting as a team. Ashley Maher had 13 digs to lead all players, while Alyssa Zwolensky added eight and a pair of aces at the service line to match Phillips for the team high.

SET ONE
After trading early leads, Lipscomb generated its first bit of separation in the opening set using a 5-0 Phillips service run to take a 15-8 lead. Kuper added her third and fourth kills of the set following a UNA service error to push the lead to 19-11. Bacus, the ASUN's Freshman of the Week, spiked a pair of kills to bookend a 4-0 run to give the Bisons a 25-15 win in the opener. Lipscomb hit a blistering .517 with just four errors on 29 swings in the first set.

SET TWO
Kuper's sixth termination of the match helped put the Bisons up 8-3 out of the gate before three kills from Wagner put the clamps down on a 7-0 run to give Lipscomb a 15-7 lead at the media timeout. After the Lions pulled back to within a point at 20-19, an ace from Zwolensky and back-to-back kills from Kuper closed out the frame 25-20. The defense limited UNA to a .031 hitting percentage in the set.

SET THREE
With the run of play going back-and-forth in the early portion of the third set, Mersman, Kuper and Rubal combined for five kills while the former also added a block to give the Bisons an 18-10 advantage. Like the second frame, the Lions fought their way back into the match with a 9-1 run to pull the score even at 19-19. After a kill from Bree Thompson put the Bisons back on top, Rubal finished off three sets from Dilfer over the next four points before Bacus closed the match with her 11th kill, giving the purple and gold a 25-22 victory.
