Lipscomb Falls Just Short at North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – Lipscomb Baseball (7-10, 2-3 ASUN) fell 7-6 in a tightly contested game at North Alabama (3-17, 2-6 ASUN) Saturday afternoon.

Despite outhitting the Lions 11-9, the Bisons weren't able to overcome a late deficit to complete the comeback.

Tiger Borom and Chaz Bertolani were impressive offensively, both going 3-for-4 at the plate. Carter Smith and Ethan Stamps also notched multi-hit outings with four combined.

Max Habegger threw five innings, allowing five hits and five runs. Tyler Drabick and Matthew Maldonado rounded things out on the mound. Drabick threw two innings, allowing two runs while Maldonado threw a scoreless inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED

For the second day in a row, Lipscomb jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Haddon Adams scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Lions responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning with a three-run home run, taking a 3-1 lead.

The Bisons, however, began to chip away at the UNA lead in the top of the fourth. Borom lead off the inning with a single and would eventually score when Carter Smith drove him in to cut the Lions' lead 3-2.

Lipscomb continued to find ways to score, plating two in the top of the fifth to retake a 4-3 lead. Again, the Bisons took advantage of a leadoff hit, this time by Stamps to get things going. This time, Borom would deliver the RBI single to tie the game. Brian Moore then took advantage of an UNA error to score the go-ahead run.

Once again, the Lions responded after going behind. North Alabama scored four unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth to again retake a 7-4 lead.

After a scoreless seventh and eighth, the Bisons needed a rally in the top of the ninth.

Things looked bleak when the first two Lipscomb batters lined out, but Borom had some fight left in him and started a two-out ninth-inning rally. Bertolani then doubled and Smith singled to push two more runs across the plate. But the rally ended there as the tying run was stranded and Lipscomb fell 7-6.
