Baseball falls in 15 innings at North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – Late inning woes proved to be the difference Sunday for the Lipscomb baseball team as the Bisons dropped a 6-5 decision to North Alabama on the road in 15 innings at Lane Field in Florence.

After taking a 5-1 in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run from Chris Bashlor, the Bisons (7-11, 2-4 ASUN) went ice cold at the plate with just one hit over the final 10 innings of action.

North Alabama (4-17, 3-6) tacked on runs in the fifth and seventh innings to pull within two before back-to-back walks to start off the bottom of the ninth came around to score and send the game to extras.

Carter Smith pace the team going 3-for-7 with two RBI, while Chaz Bertolani and Tiger Borom each collected a pair of hits and a RBI.

Southpaw Logan Van Treeck put up another solid outing across 5.0 innings where he allowed two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. Tyler Drabick (0-1) suffered the loss in 2.1 frames of work. He only allowed one hit and struck out three, but his three walks led to the winning run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the third day in a row, Lipscomb grabbed the first lead of the game.

Haddon Adams reached on a 2-out error in the top of the third inning before a single from Borom moved him into scoring position. Bertolani then ripped an RBI-single, before Smith followed suit with a 2-RBI single to give the Bisons a 3-0 lead.

Lipscomb then made it 4-0 in the top of the fourth on Borom's RBI knock that scored Maddux Houghton.

The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the frame on a leadoff homer from Peyton Thomas to make it 4-1.

Bashlor got that run right back for the Bisons in the fifth after cranking his third long ball of the season to lead things off.

North Alabama's Drew Hudson reached in the home half of the fifth after doubling and stealing third. Devne Daniel singled him home on the next at-bat to make it 5-2.

The Lions struck again in the seventh inning after recording four hits in the frame to cut it to 5-3.

The Bisons brought in closer Guilfoil to try for a 2-inning save. Things looked good in the eighth after punching out the first two batters and then forcing a ground ball to the pitcher to send it to the ninth.

After an empty top of the frame for Lipscomb, the Lions worked back-to-back walks from Guilfoil to put two on with nobody away. After a passed ball moved both into scoring position, Kylan Barnett tied the game on a 2-RBI single. Guilfoil would end up striking out the side, but not before UNA sent it to extras.

Lipscomb got runners to second and third in the 10th, but a ground ball to third base ended the threat. Over the next five frames, the Bisons would only get one baserunner after going three up, three down four times.

In the bottom of the 15th, UNA drew a leadoff walk from Drabick in his second inning of work. After a sacrifice bunt and a fly ball to deep center put the runner 90 feet from home, Reid Homan singled home the winning run with two outs.

The defeat marks the first time since April 13-15, 2018 at Stetson that the Bisons have been swept in ASUN Conference play.
