Weather Pushes Softball Doubleheader At Bellarmine To Tuesday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – As if COVID-19 hadn't caused enough problems for Lipscomb Lady Bisons softball, the team has been forced to alter their schedule due to freezing temperatures and possible snow in the Bluegrass State.

Originally scheduled for Wednesday, weather conditions have moved up the ASUN doubleheader with Bellarmine to Tuesday. Games times are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

"To say the least this has been a crazy season," Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. "Every team is dealing with their own version of COVID. It is affecting every team differently. Some teams are striving, and some are struggling."

Now weather is once again causing problems as well.

"We have a lot of youth and inexperience on the field," Ryman said. "That is never going to be an excuse for us.

"I think there is a lot of talent in this group, but we are still growing. I think they are still working to understand what it takes to be successful at this level."

Lipscomb is 14-16, 3-7 in the ASUN. Bellarmine is 6-24 and winless in 10 games in the conference. The Lady Bisons beat them 5-0 last Wednesday.

The Lady Bisons have three players batting above .300 – Amy Vetula and Kamrie Rich are tied for the team lead at .330 and Caitlin Turner is batting .323.
Five players are in double figures in runs batted in led by Olivia Ward with 16. Rich has 14. Vetula and Presley Leebrick each have 12. Caitlin Turner has driven in 11 runs.

Breana Burke (10-7) has thrown 111.2 innings with a 2.19 earned run average. Maddie Siemer (2-3) has posted a 2.68 ERA.

"As good as Bre Burke is and as much as she has led us in the circle she has not been in this role before," Ryman said. "Maddie Siemer has not been in this role before either even though they are both fifth-year seniors.

"They are being given the ball over and over again in No. 1 and No. 2 roles. They have had really good careers, but the pitching staffs they were on before were deep. We have had some injuries and they have risen to the forefront. They are doing such a great job for us keeping us in games and giving us opportunities."

Grace Werner leads Bellarmine hitting with a .310 average. She also has nine stolen bases, a team high. Sydney Young leads the Knights with 16 RBI.

Natalie Magnus is 1-6 with a 2.87 ERA. Carson Goatley is 4-8 with a 3.24 ERA.

"The upside for this team is still tremendous," Ryman said. "This can be a successful year for us. We just need to help them understand attacking the final part of this year and being confident."
