Lipscomb Falls after Ninth Inning Heartbreak

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb Baseball dropped a heartbreaking 5-3 decision Saturday night at Ken Dugan Field. The Bisons lead or were tied with the Lions the entire game until North Alabama scored what would be the game-winning runs in the top of the ninth.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bisons took the lead in the bottom of the third after Robbie Merced leadoff the inning with a double.

He went on to score when Tiger Borom picked up the first RBI of the game for a 1-0 lead.

North Alabama tied the game in the top of the fifth after Lipscomb walked a Lion with the bases loaded. Tyler Drabick was able to get out of the jam with little damage and a 1-1 tie ballgame.

Lipscomb responded by retaking the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Once again, Merced reached as the leadoff man and was pushed to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.

Merced crossed home plate for the second time when Maddux Houghton blasted a double to left center field to give Lipscomb a 2-1 lead.

The Lions quickly tied things back up with a run of their own in the top of the sixth for a 2-2 ballgame.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the bottom of the sixth when Lipscomb retook the lead. Malik Williams worked a leadoff walk and David Graves rocketed a hit down the left field line to put runners on the corners with no outs.

Chaz Bertolani delivered the go-ahead RBI with an infield hit that would give the Bisons a 3-2 lead heading into the seventh inning.

Once again, North Alabama tied it back up 3-3 in the top of the seventh. The Lions took its first lead of the night in the top of the ninth inning with two runs for a 5-3 lead.

Ultimately, the Bisons were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth as Lipscomb fell 5-3.
