Volleyball falls in five sets to Houston in season opener

NORMAN, Okla. – Houston battled back from an 0-2 deficit to knock off Lipscomb volleyball in five sets Friday in the season opener at McCasland Field House in the Oklahoma Invitational.

The Bisons opened the match behind 25-23 and 25-22 victories in the first two sets, before the Cougars edged out 25-22, 25-23 and 15-5 decisions the rest of the way.

Lipscomb trailed for much of the first set, falling behind 20-12 before back-to-back kills from hitters Kam Bacus and Logan Gish sparked a rally. Sophomore Meg Mersman and senior Lanie Wagner combined for six kills in the midst of a 9-1 run to close the opening frame 25-23 and give the Bisons a 1-0 lead. They hit .448 as a team and held UH to .143 with eight errors.

The second set saw the purple and gold fall behind 9-5 in the early going before an Anna Aubele kill led a 4-0 run to pull even. Mersman was in the middle of another Bison from both sides of the net, contributing a kill and three blocks to help build a 17-12 advantage. The Cougars clawed their way back to within two on multiple occasions down the stretch, but Mersman responded with three more kills, including the final strike, to take the set, 25-22.

The third set saw five lead changes early on before four Lipscomb errors and a Cougars ace allowed Houston to lead 15-10. Bacus went on a run with three quick kills and Aubele landed back-to-back serves for the first time in her career trimmed the Bisons deficit to 20-19. Houston extended the lead with three straight points and held on to take the set, 25-22.

With neither side gaining more than a two-point advantage midway through the fourth, the Cougars got four kills and an ace from Abbie Jackson to push their lead to 19-14. Bacus continued to have successful swings with back-to-back kills to ignite a run, before Aublee connected on back-to-back aces once again to pull Lipscomb to within 23-22. However, Houston won two of the next three points to claim the fourth (25-23) and send the match to a deciding set.

The Cougars carried their momentum into the final stanza and raced out to an 11-3 lead, while never allowing the Bisons to take consecutive points. Following Delaney Dilfer's third ace of the match, Houston reeled off four straight points to secure the set, 15-5, and win the match.
