Bisons sink Sooners in four sets

NORMAN, Okla. – The Lipscomb volleyball team bounced back in a big way Saturday, defeating Oklahoma 3-1 in the team's final match of the OU Invitational.

The Bisons responded from Friday's season-opening loss in five sets to take down the host Sooners by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 27-25 and 25-21 inside McCasland Field House in Norman.

The victory was the first-ever over Oklahoma, and just the second victory over a Big 12 opponent in program history (Kansas – 2014).

Edmond, Oklahoma native Kamryn Bacus followed up her career-high 21-kill effort on Friday with a match-high 19 kills versus the Sooners. Meg Mersman joined her in double figures with 11 and added a team-high four blocks.

SET ONE
Bacus hit .500 and tallied six kills with just one error for the Bisons, who trailed 8-5 early before outscoring the Sooners 20-14 over the remainder of the set. Helped by back-to-back dumps from Delaney Dilfer and the serving of freshman Libby Steinhart (two aces), a 9-3 purple and gold run put Lipscomb in front 14-11. After trading points led to a 3-0 run from the Sooners to regain the advantage, the Bisons called timeout.

Out of the break, three Bisons recorded kills while senior Lanie Wagner put down the clinching point to cap a 6-2 closing spurt. Overcoming five OU blocks in the frame, six of the Herd combined for 15 kills and the team outhit the Sooners .345 to .276.

SET TWO
Precision serving from Lipscomb put the pressure on the Sooners early as the Bisons rode five service aces to a 19-12 lead. OU took a Bison service error and turned it into six consecutive points to pull to within one. Then after a kill from freshman Anna Aubele, Oklahoma put together a 7-2 run to get the come from behind 25-22 win in set two. Lipscomb was outhit .306 to .061 in the stanza.

SET THREE
The Bisons led 18-13 after landing consecutive swings from Bacus, Aubele and Dilfer, but the Sooners responded with a 9-3 run to take a 22-21 lead, forcing Coach Rosenthal to call timeout. Kills from Mersman and Bacus capped a 3-1 spurt out of the break to give the Bisons a set point at 24-23. OU, however, turned in the next two points to flip the script and take a 25-24 lead to put the pressure on Lipscomb.

The young squad was up to the challenge as Mersman and Dilfer blocked an attack, Delaney Smith served up an ace and Aubele hammered home the clinching kill to win 27-25. Five Bisons picked up multiple kills as Wagner led the way with four. Dilfer had 10 assists and Ashleigh Albert scooped five digs.

SET FOUR
With the match victory on the line, the Bisons charged out of the gate and led wire-to-wire in the fourth frame. Lipscomb blistered the Sooners with 17 assists on 19 kills and hit .417 to get the team's first win of the young season.
Bacus was credited with six kills on eight swings (.625), while Mersman also had six on nine attacks (.556). Dilfer was dynamite in orchestrating the offense with 16 of her 44 assists in the set.
