Volleyball falls to Kansas in LUV Invite opener

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb volleyball team opened up home action Thursday night with a 3-0 defeat (25-14, 25-15, 25-16) to the Kansas Jayhawks in the first match of the 10th annual LUV Invite.

It was a tough night all around for the Bisons (1-2) as KU won the hitting battle .387 to .056 and outblocked the purple and gold, 12-2.

Sophomore Meg Mersman led the way offensively with nine kills (.286) and two blocks, while setter Delaney Dilfer recorded 19 assists with four kills, four digs and two aces.

Mersman tallied four kills in the opening set, but KU was able to dig 10 balls and recorded just two errors on 22 swings. Following an Ashleigh Albert ace and a block from Mersman to pull even at 4-4, the Jayhawks led the rest of the way and outscored Lipscomb 21-10 the rest of the way.

Mersman added three more kills in the second set to lead the Bisons in a back-and-forth frame midway through. The sides had eight ties and four lead changes following Mersman's block to make it 10-9 Lipscomb. KU used an 8-1 run to take a 17-11 advantage and force the Bisons to call both timeouts. Freshman Anna Aubele put down a kill and Dilfer followed with an ace to pull the team back to within four in the frame, but the Jayhawks extended their lead to take the set, 25-15.

The third set saw Dilfer with four kills and five assists, but Kansas was able to swing .375 and block four balls to break away from six ties and win the set, 25-16. The frame changed when after Lipscomb built a 9-7 lead, Kansas dropped in three straight aces to spark a 5-0 run and regain a lead it would not give up.
