Volleyball drops LUV Invite battle with No. 15 Western Kentucky

NASHVILLE – Despite a pair of Bisons hitting double-digit kills, the Lipscomb volleyball team battled No. 15 Western Kentucky to a 3-1 loss on day two of the LUV Invite Friday at Allen Arena.

After a lackluster performance from the Bisons (1-3) on Thursday, they set the tone early against the Hilltoppers (4-0) to lead wire-to-wire in the first set, winning 25-21. Visiting WKU found a groove offensively behind three players with double-digit kills to win 25-17, 25-11, 25-17 the rest of the way.

The Bisons will get Saturday off before returning Sunday at 2 p.m. to close out the LUV Invite. Kansas and WKU will play at noon on Saturday, followed by WKU again versus Wake Forest at 4:30 p.m.

SET ONE
Freshman Addi Pelham got the first start of her career and came out of the gate swinging. The Lenexa, Kansas native picked up two kills and a block on the first five points of the set to help Lipscomb to an 8-2 lead. A few points later, Kamryn Bacus recorded three kills in a 6-1 run and Meg Mersman earned back-to-back points to make it an 18-12 Bison lead. The Bisons withstood a late Hilltopper charge, but never allowed them to get any closer than three points on the way to a 25-21 win.

Pelham hit .300 with a team high four kills in the frame. She also swatted down two balls on the defensive end. The Bisons outhit WKU .351 to .133 with 15 kills and only two errors on 37 attacks. Delaney Dilfer had 10 of the team's 15 assists, dug out four balls with two kills and served an ace to help the attack.

SET TWO
Lipscomb and WKU battled a tight back and forth early frame with four ties and three lead changes and neither side in front by more than two points until the Hilltoppers got an ace from Logan Kael to pull in front 14-11.  Mersman stopped the 3-0 run with her first kill of the set before WKU took advantage of five Bison miscues to help win 25-17.

SET THREE
Back-to-back blocks put Lipscomb up 5-4 early, but from that point on, not much went right for the purple and gold. The 'Toppers outhit the Bisons .375 to .000 and served up five aces. They went on runs of 6-0, 5-0 and 4-0 to take the set 25-11.

SET FOUR
The fourth set went a lot like the previous with Western Kentucky outhitting Lipscomb .433 to .111 with 16 kills and just three errors on 30 swings. The Bisons committed eight errors on 27 attacks and had a hard time stopping WKU's tandem of Paige Briggs and Lauren Matthews, who combined for 10 kills on 14 swings. With the Bisons trailing 12-9 after a kill from Pelham, WKU used a 9-3 run to build some cushion and went back-and-forth the rest of the way to take the set 25-17.
