Bacus floors 14 kills in loss to No. 6 Purdue

Box Score CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Lipscomb volleyball team closed out the Xavier Invitational Saturday afternoon with a hard fought 3-0 loss to No. 6 Purdue at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati.
The Boilermakers took the sets by scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-17. They improved to 5-1 on the season, while the Bisons dropped to 1-6.
 
Despite Purdue hitting .444 with only eight errors on 99 swings, the purple and gold gave them all they could handle by putting up one of their better matches of the season with a gritty performance.

The Bisons hit .269 with 44 kills and 16 miscues on 104 attacks. Sophomore Kamryn Bacus torched the Boilermakers from the outside with 14 kills on 22 swings and a .500 hitting percentage. She was the only Bison in double figures as Addi Pelham and Garrett Joiner each collected nine.

The first set saw Purdue take a 5-1 lead out of the gate, but the Bisons battled back and pulled to within one point on five separate occasions before the Boilermakers got to 25 first. Bacus swung .857 with six kills in the stanza, while Lipscomb hit .379 as a group with 15 digs.


The second frame saw a more back-and-forth affair with nine ties and five lead changes. Down five points midway through the set, Lipscomb sparked a 6-1 run with kills from four players and an ace from Alex Spencer to grab a 19-18 advantage. Purdue responded with a 5-0 run of its own and the score seesawed from there until a kill from Grace Cleveland ended the set, 25-22 for the Boilermakers. Pelham led the way with five kills in the set, while Bacus and Joiner each added four.


The third frame got away from Lipscomb in the early going, finding itself down 13-4 after using both timeouts. Bacus got hot down the stretch with four kills to help the purple and gold pull to within five at 22-17 before the Boilermakers ran off the final three points. Purdue outhit the Bisons .556 to .286 in the set with 18 kills and just three errors, compared to 12 and four for Lipscomb.

  • Lipscomb hit a season best .269 and committed a season low 16 errors.
  • Delaney Dilfer recorded 36 assists and seven digs from her setter position.
  • Facing her old team, Joiner came up big in spots for Lipscomb with nine kills on 21 swings, matching her season high.

  • The Bisons had three service aces and one block in the loss.
