Volleyball sweeps Belmont to continue its Boulevard reign

NASHVILLE – Behind a big match from Kamryn Bacus, Lipscomb volleyball made quick work of crosstown rival Belmont in straight sets Tuesday night in Allen Arena. The Bisons won the Battle of the Boulevard by scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-18.

Lipscomb has now won 15 of the last 16 against the Bruins, including eight straight. The Bisons (2-6) have not lost to Belmont since 2011.

Bacus finished with 17 kills and hit .387 to lead the Bisons. It was her fifth straight match with double figures kills. Fellow sophomore Meg Mersman finished with a season high .412 hitting percentage and put down 10 kills in the attack.

Delaney Dilfer set the tempo for Lipscomb with 34 of the team's 38 assists and added five digs. Libero Delaney Smith paced the team with 11 digs, while Logan Gish added seven.

The Bisons led wire-to-wire in the first set after winning the first four points of the match. After the Bruins (2-5) fought back to within one, Kathleen Lowry served up Lipscomb's first ace of the match to help extend the advantage. Bacus went to work on the Bruins and powered the Bisons to a 25-17 set one win with six of the team's 15 kills in the frame.

The purple and gold carried its offense into the second set where it swung .321 with only four errors on 28 attacks. Bacus followed up with another six kills in the frame and helped Lipscomb build a 19-9 lead at one point. Belmont tried to make a run with three aces and pulled to within 21-19, but Bacus and Aubele registered three consecutive kills before Bacus and Lowry ended the set with a block to win 25-20.

The third set was tight throughout with neither side leading by more than three points until the final points. Belmont hit .400 and Lipscomb hit .379, while combining for four ties and a pair of lead changes. Down 17-14 after a service error, Lipscomb ran off a 9-0 run with Gish on the service line to regain the lead for good. Gish delivered two aces, while three Bisons racked up kills. Delaney Smith ended the match with her second ace of the set to win 25-18.
