THE SHORT STORY: Lipscomb Men's Soccer opened ASUN play with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Bellarmine on Saturday.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Lipscomb took the lead in the 29' minute with Marlon Grossman's first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead.
  • Bellarmine's Nolan McGrath equalized in the 70' minute.
  • Ninety minutes wasn't enough to find a winner and the match would head to overtime.
  • Hayes Wood score his second game-winner of the season with just 15 seconds left in the overtime period for a 2-1 Lipscomb victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Bellarmine had a few chances in the early minutes of the match, but Michael Sibley was solid between the pipes with the help of his back line to keep things scoreless.

The Bisons settled in and sustained pressure in its attacking third in the second half of the first frame for several chances in front of goal. Lipscomb was finally able to break through in the 29' minute when Bakary Bagayoko took the ball up the left flank and played a beautiful right-footed cross to a waiting Grossman. He tapped the ball into the lower right corner of the net for a 1-0 Lipscomb lead.

The Knights equalized in the 70' minute with a great finish by McGrath for a 1-1 ballgame.

In the final minute of regulation, Killian Byrne nearly netted the game-winner, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar to send the match to overtime.

With 15-seconds left on the clock in overtime, Louis Robinson played a ball down the left side to Killian Byrne who was able to turn and send a cross to the back post. Wood and his defender both skied for the header, but Wood came out on top and put the header past the keeper for the golden-goal win.

NOTABLE:
  • This is the third-straight Lipscomb match that has gone into overtime.
  • Lipscomb outshot the Knights 21-14 on the night.
  • Sibley made five saves.
  • Lipscomb's shots were taken by seven different Bisons.
  • Bagayoko directed a team-high three shots on goal.

THOUGHTS FROM THE BENCH
"This game means so much to this team given that we lost to Bellarmine twice last year," said Wood. "Starting conference play 1-0 is huge for us to just keep rolling and doing everything we can to keep winning."
