Bisons drop ASUN opener to FGCU

NASHVILLE – In an anticipated rematch from last season's conference championship game, Lipscomb volleyball was unable to repeat its performance, falling in three sets to Florida Gulf Coast in the ASUN opener for both squads.

The Bisons (3-8, 0-1) went back-and-forth with the Eagles (9-4, 1-0) and took them to the brink in each set, but it was FGCU who pulled out the frames by scores of 27-25, 25-23 and 25-20.

SET ONE
The sides traded points for most of the set before a kill and an ace from Kamryn Bacus sandwiched a 3-0 run for the Bisons to give them a 12-9 lead. Following a kill from Caroline Stogner, FGCU scored three straight points to pull even at 15-15. From that point on, no team had more than a two-point advantage the rest of the way.

The set looked to be going Lipscomb's way after Logan Gish floored back-to-back kills, and three straight for the Bisons, to take a 23-21 lead, but the Eagles won the next four points and six of the next eight to stave off the purple and gold, 27-25.

Lipscomb hit .222 in the frame with 15 kills and seven errors on 36 attacks. Delaney Dilfer recorded 13 assists, while Stogner put down five kills (.300) and Bacus (.429) and Gish (.333) each added four. In total, there were 17 ties and seven lead changes in the set.

SET TWO
Set two started much like the first, trading early runs. Down 10-8, the Bisons got back-to-back kills from Meg Mersman and then a block from the sophomore to go on a four-point run and grab a 12-10 lead, forcing FGCU to call timeout. Lipscomb got a pair of kills from Gish to extend the advantage to 15-11 before the Eagles halted the momentum.

The Bisons worked their way to a 17-15 lead behind an ace from Delaney Smith, but the Eagles ran off a 5-0 run to take the lead by three. Down 24-20, the purple and gold made a late run behind a kill from Gish and an ace from Ashleigh Albert to pull within one, but FGCU's Lauren Clark put down the set-clinching kill, 25-23.

FGCU outhit the Bisons .300 to .100 in the frame. Gish recorded five kills and hit .333 in the frame, while Mersman totaled three blocks.

SET THREE
In set three, Lipscomb looked to be in control early as the Bisons led by as many as five and held the advantage from the onset until a block from FGCU tied the score at 15-15. After the Eagles ran off a 3-0 run, the Bisons responded with three straight of their own, a pair of kills from Mersman and an ace from Gish, to knot it at 19. The Eagles closed the night with a 6-1 run to get the victory, 25-20.

FGCU won the hitting battle .235 to .057 and recorded 4.0 blocks against the Bisons, while Bacus led the way with four kills.
