Career nights help Bisons knock off Jacksonville, 3-1

Box Score NASHVILLE – Five Bisons put together career performances Saturday night to help Lipscomb defeat Jacksonville, 3-1, in ASUN Conference crossover action at Allen Arena.

The purple and gold won by scores of 25-15, 25-18, 21-25 and 25-21 as it improved to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Meg Mersman powered the Bisons on both sides of the net with a career high 16 kills and 7.0 blocks. The sophomore middle hit .464 with just three errors on 28 attacks.

Logan Gish finished second on the team with 13.0 total points after recording eight kills, but her 14 digs and four aces were personal bests for the senior.

Delaney Dilfer was phenomenal all night with 34 assists, eight digs, 4.0 blocks and three aces. The sophomore setter also chipped in a career high six kills.

Lipscomb put pressure on the Dolphins (3-11, 0-2) from the onset behind the service line. The Bisons totaled 15 aces in the match, with six coming in the first set and five in the final frame.

It marks the most aces in a match for Lipscomb since recording 16 against Stetson on Oct. 7, 2016. It is also the most aces in a match of any team in the ASUN, beating the previous high of 13.

SET 1
After seesawing back-and-forth with three ties early on, Lipscomb reeled off a 6-0 run with Gish on the line, including a pair of aces, to grab a 12-6 lead. Later in the set, Libby Steinhart recorded an ace and then Ashleigh Albert followed suit with two of her own. With Albert serving, the Bisons ran off a 7-0 run, that saw Mersman put down three kills, to go up 22-10. A few points later, Mersman and Addi Pelham recorded back-to-back kills to seal the frame, 25-15.

The Bisons hit just .118 in the set, but got six aces and held JU to a -.036 clip. Mersman hit .625 with five of the team's 11 kills. Delaney Smith and Logan Gish combined for 11 digs.

SET 2
Lipscomb led wire-to-wire in the second set after opening with a 6-1 spurt that saw Gish and Mersman team up for two blocks. A kill from Mersman midway through, gave the Bisons their biggest advantage at 16-8. Kamryn Bacus finally got rolling in the frame and landed the final two kills to win 25-18.

Bacus had a team high five kills in the set, hitting .500 on 10 swings. The team outhit JU .394 to .152, combining for 16 kills and just three errors. The defense was strong once again with 15 digs with four players recording at least three. They also had 4.0 blocks in the set, led by Mersman's three.

SET 3
Jacksonville won the first six points of the third and held the Bisons at bay until they chipped away and eventually pulled even at 14-14. But after trading the next few points, the errors proved too much to overcome for the purple and gold. Trailing 18-17, Lipscomb had back-to-back balls blocked and had a bad set to allow the Dolphins to keep the advantage and hold on to win 25-21.

The Bisons hit just .077 with 12 kills and nine errors in 39 attacks. Jacksonville swung .200, but committed only three miscues and blocked 5.0 Bison attacks.

SET 4
The final set was the closest from start to finish as the teams tied the score 10 times and exchanged four lead changes. Lipscomb won the first three points and eventually built its advantage to 10-6 after another ace from Gish, but the Dolphins were able to come back and take a 12-11 lead. Dilfer followed up a Mersman kill with back-to-back aces late in the set, before Mersman and Garrett Joiner wrapped up the match on consecutive swings, 25-21.

Mersman hit .571 with five kills, while Gish and Bacus each added three in the set. Dilfer put down two of the team's five aces and Smith dug out seven balls.
