Bisons douse Flames in five behind full team effort

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb volleyball concluded the first weekend of ASUN Conference action Sunday night with a 3-2 come from behind victory over the Liberty Flames in Allen Arena.

In a match that made those in attendance feel as though they just hopped off a 2.5 hour ride on a roller coaster, the purple and gold won by scores of 25-12, 22-25, 18-25, 25-22 and 15-11.

The Bisons improved to 5-8 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Flames fell to 6-4 and 2-1 after defeating Eastern Kentucky and Bellarmine earlier in the weekend.

Meg Mersman matched her career high with 16 kills (.344 H%) for the second night in a row to lead the Bisons, while senior Logan Gish recorded the first double-double of her career with 14 kills and 12 digs.

After struggling for much of the night, Kamryn Bacus caught fire in the fifth frame with four kills on five attacks to give her 11 on the night.

Delaney Dilfer picked up her first double-double of the season behind 47 assists and 11 digs. She also added three blocks and a pair of aces. Delaney Smith led the Bisons from the back row with 15 digs and Kathleen Lowry paved the way at the net with a team high 6.0 blocks.

SET 1

Simply put, the Bisons dominated the Flames in the first set after hitting them in the mouth at the onset and leading wire to wire. Lipscomb won the first four points and later went on a 9-1 run to build an 18-4 lead. The block was strong with Dilfer and Lowry teaming up on back-to-back stuffs to push the lead to 21-5. Liberty took advantage of a number of Bison miscues late, but Mersman hammered home her final two swings to get the opening victory, 25-12.

Gish led the team with four kills and hit .500 in the frame, while Dilfer totaled 10 assists and two blocks, and Lowry added four blocks.

SET 2

Lipscomb lost its momentum in a second set that saw a match high 11 ties and five lead changes. After battling back-and-forth early on, the Bisons got into trouble with errors on the attack and at the service line. Liberty took advantage and built a 19-14 lead before a kill from Bacus sparked a 4-0 run and pulled the Bisons to within 21-20 before Liberty closed it out, 25-22.

Liberty outhit Lipscomb .281 to .212 as the Bisons committed seven attack and four service errors. The Flames also recorded four blocks.

SET 3

The Bisons hit -.030 with seven kills and eight errors on 33 swings while Liberty led by as many as 10 and held the advantage from the very first point. Enough said.

SET 4

Liberty used a pair of 4-0 runs early on to build a 16-10 lead over the Bisons, forcing head coach Brandon Rosenthal to call both timeouts. Whatever the 19th-year head man and reigning ASUN Coach of the Year said, it worked. Mersman responded with three quick kills, while Ashleigh Albert and Dilfer each added an ace as the Bisons closed the set on a 15-6 run to get the win, 25-22.

Mersman, Gish and Addi Pelham each had three kills in the set, while Albert put down a pair of aces.

SET 5
Playing it third 5-set match of the season, Lipscomb jumped out to a 9-5 lead following a kill and a block from Gish, forcing Liberty to call its second timeout. The Flames pulled to within one point three times, the last at 12-11, but the Bisons were the better side as they scored the final three points with Bacus sealing the win.

Lipscomb hit .391 to Liberty's .174 in the set. Bacus had four kills and Gish added three.
