Men's Soccer's Babak Abouzar: Where Are They Now?

Babak Abouzar was a defender for two years on the Lipscomb Bisons soccer team after playing two years at Richland College in Dallas, Texas. He received ASUN All-Academic honors and served for two years as a graduate assistant coach at Lipscomb. He spent some time recalling his days as a Bison for Lipscombsports.com.

Name and sport played:

Babak Abouzar - Soccer

What years did you compete for Lipscomb, and who coached you?

I played 2006-2008 for Coach Charles Morrow.

What teammates were most memorable, and why?

T.J. Williams, Kezi Lara and Miguel Da Silva. They were great teammates but even better friends. We pretty much did everything together. To this day, we still talk and it is like we never missed a beat.

What degrees have you earned, from where, and when?

I earned both my undergrad degree in Business in 2008 and my MBA in 2009 from Lipscomb.

Why did you attend Lipscomb?

My mom and aunt attended Lipscomb in the 70s. My mom really wanted me to attend but I was hesitant at first. I was raised in the Church of Christ and at the time wasn't too fond of attending a religious school.

After visiting with Charles and the soccer team and seeing campus life I was sold.I can honestly say attending Lipscomb was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

What is your favorite athletic memory at Lipscomb?

The bus trips to away games were so much fun. That was one of many opportunities that I got to bond with my teammates.

Making the conference tournament my senior year and beating Belmont in the first round at JU is something I still remember fondly. It seems silly to say now, I mean our men's program is now consistently ranked in the top 25, competing and beating Power 5 teams and making it deep in the NCAA tournament but back then it was a big deal!

Who influenced your athletic career at Lipscomb?

Our assistant coach Kevin Burke. He is one of the best storytellers I know. He always had a pregame fable that got us ready to play. After Coach Morrow would give us the scouting report Kevin would be ready to give us a motivational story that would get us ready to battle on the field.

What do you remember about Lipscomb campus life during your time here?

Everything! I remember going to chapel and hanging out at the Bison Square afterwards and rushing to eat Chick-fil-A so I got to class on time. I remember attending talent shows and Super Bowl Watch parties in Shamblin Theatre. Everyone practically knew everyone which is something I really enjoyed.

What are the most valuable lessons you learned in your time at Lipscomb?

I learned how to have a strong work ethic. Having to balance school and a sport was tough but it really helped prepare me for life after college.

I also learned how to deal with and respond to adversity. It really helped me in my journey of adulting. There are stories from college that to this day I tell my student-athletes to hopefully help them in their own personal growth.

Who were your favorite professors and why?

Mike Kendrick and Allison Duke. They both made our Business classes fun and practical. They were very approachable and showed how you can be a profitable yet ethical person in corporate America.

Where did you grow up?

In Terrell, 30 miles east of Dallas, Texas.

Where do you live, and what do you do now?

I live in Little Elm, Texas and am the head soccer coach at Texas Woman's University, the largest university primarily for women in the country.
