Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball unable to hang on at Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Lipscomb men's basketball was in search of its first-ever win over Jacksonville State Tuesday night.

Holding a 20-point lead with 15:30 remaining in the game, the Bisons looked poised to do so, but costly turnovers and a flurry of three-pointers from the Gamecocks left the purple and gold still searching as Lipscomb was defeated 88-83 by JSU in the first-ever meeting as ASUN Conference opponents.

The road loss was the second in three days for the Bisons, who dropped to 8-10 overall and 1-3 in league play, after falling at Central Arkansas 93-88 on Sunday. Jacksonville State improved to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

A 22-2 run midway through the first half gave the Bisons a big lead, and the margin reached as many as 18 (45-27) with 1:43 left in the period, but a 7-0 run from the home Gamecocks trimmed their deficit to 48-34 at halftime. Lipscomb's 48 points were the most scored on JSU in the first half this season and the second-most points scored in any half (50).

JSU continued its momentum and scored the first two buckets out of the break to get it back to within 10, but the Bisons responded. They took advantage of a turnover with three-pointers from Parker Hazen and Greg Jones to spark a 10-0 purple and gold run and extend their lead to the biggest margin of the night at 58-38 with 15:36 on the clock.

The Bisons vaunted offense had put the Gamecocks in their largest deficit of the season and old "Uncle Mo" seemed to be on Lipscomb's side. However, it was not the case.

From that point forward, the purple and gold struggled shooting from the floor making just 8-of-23 attempts for a 35-percent clip. Jacksonville State, however, could not miss. They connected on 14-of-23 in that span, and the back breaker was that nine of them were dialed up from long distance.

A 15-3 run that included three triples, quickly got the game back within single digits and it only took two minutes. The Bisons lead was down to 61-53 with 13:28 remaining.

Like it had most of the night, Lipscomb responded with big buckets from KJ Johnson and Hazen to stretch it back to 12, but back-to-back 3-pointers from the Gamecocks took all the air out of the Bisons momentum.

The Bisons really could only muster points from the free throw line down the stretch as seven of the final 16 points came at the stripe. JSU recaptured its first lead since 16-14 when Jalen Gibbs sank a three ball at the 4:50 mark. Down three, Lipscomb got a big-time bucket from Will Pruitt as the freshman point guard converted on a 4-point play after drilling a contested three to put the Bisons back in front 81-80 with four minutes to play.

JSU tied the game back up on the next possession and outscored Lipscomb 8-2 down the stretch to get the win and send the Bisons back home with a two-game losing streak.
