Volleyball Earns Senior Night Sweep Over Owls

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb volleyball returned to Allen Arena for their final home match of the regular season on Friday night as they celebrated Senior Night with a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-19, 25-15) over the Owls to move up to a 14-12 overall record and an 11-4 mark in conference play.
 
Three Bisons earned double-digit kills with junior Caroline Stogner leading the way with a double-double of 14 kills and 12 digs in the contest. Addi Pelham and Logan Gish both put down 10 kills to Lipscomb's total 46 kills.
 
Freshman setter Sophia Hudepohl continued to lead the Bisons' offense with aplomb as she dished out 40 assists over the three-set showdown. Defensively, the Purple and Gold picked up 28 total digs with an eight of the 28 coming from the platform of libero Delaney Smith.
 
The Bisons put away six blocks including a match-high-tying three block assists from Pelham.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET 1
  • The Bisons opened the match with the first point on a bad set from Kennesaw State.
  • Kailee Bass put away the Bisons' first kill of the match to put Lipscomb up 2-1 early in the contest.
  • A string of Lipscomb attack errors and Owl kills saw Kennesaw State cultivate a 14-8 lead, but the Bisons soon began to find momentum behind a kill from Pelham immediately followed up by an ace from Stogner.
  • The Owls responded for 16-10, two mishits for Kennesaw State kept their lead at 16-12 for the time being.
  • Freshman Berkley Mischler buried her third kill and was followed by a pair of back-to-back aces from Smith to bring the Bisons within one point.
  • Kennesaw State fought to maintain control with a kill and an ace to go up by three, but big moves from the Bisons brought the match tied at 19 points with a kill from Gish.
  • Stogner's first kill of the match gave the Bisons back the lead at 20-19 and her second gave it back to them again after a missed serve.
  • The third kill of the night from Stogner gave Lipscomb a 22-21 lead which then extended to 23-21 on net violation by the Owls.
  • Kennesaw State drew within one on a missed serve for Lipscomb, but a big kill from Stogner gave the Bisons their first set point opportunity of the night which they collected on with a hammer from Gish.
  • The Bisons out-swung the Owls .357 to .267 in the first frame with 15 kills to 12.
  • Smith and Stogner each scooped up four digs in the first set, the Bisons led the first set in digs with 10 to the Owls' seven.
                                        
SET 2
  • The Bisons carried their momentum with them into the second set as a huge kill from Pelham on an open net displayed their dominance early.
  • Kennesaw State capitalized on a pair of hitting errors from the Bisons to go up 7-5, which then extend to a 10-7 lead with a Lipscomb service error.
  • A pair of kills from Stogner and some key momentum gained from hitting errors by the Owls set the Bisons on a surge to close the gap.
  • An ace from Smith cut the lead to one point at 13-12, and a ball-handling error by KSU brought the match tied before a swipe from Gish on overpass gave the Bisons the lead for the first time in the second frame.
  • Pelham put away her sixth kill of the night to restore Lipscomb's lead after the Owls tooled the block on the outside.
  • Mischler buried her fourth kill of the matchup to extend the lead to two, sparking a push from the squad to a 21-18 lead.
  • Pelham, Bass, and Gish all added kills to their tally to pull the Bisons to their second set point opportunity of the match before Mischler ended the set with her fifth kill of the night to claim the set for Lipscomb at 25-19 going into the break.
  • The Bisons continued to out-hit Kennesaw State as the two programs posted hitting percentages of .375 and .083 respectively in the second frame.
 
SET 3
  • The Bisons felt the fire as they claimed the first point of set three.
  • A hammer from Stogner for her ninth kill of the night gave the Bisons an early lead.
  • Big swings abounded on both sides, but the Bisons pressed their foot on the accelerator and claimed a 10-4 lead on Gish's sixth kill of the match.
  • The Owls put together a chain of points but the Bisons held on to their five point lead wikth Mischler's seventh kill for 14-9.
  • Pelham put down a massive kill out of the middle over a triple block for 17-11 to the Bisons.
  • Lipscomb's squad kept up the pressure until an ace from Gish provided the Bisons with a match point opportunity.
  • Kennesaw State kept the match alive with their 29th total kill of the match, but Stogner's 14th kill called the match for Lipscomb.
 
HERD NOTES
  • The Bisons out-swung the Owls with 46 total kills to 29 across the three sets.
  • Lipscomb's offense was effective and efficient as the Bisons put away kills at a clip of .407, a season-high for the squad.
  • The Purple and Gold put pressure on the Owls from the serving line with 10 aces over the three sets, three each from Stogner, Gish, and Smith.
  • Stogner recorded her seventh double-double of the season with her 14 kills and 12 digs.
  • With big digs from Stogner and Smith, the Bisons out-dug the Owls 28 to 19.
