THE SHORT STORY

Lipscomb women's basketball played their first contest in the Bank of Hawaii Classic against the University of San Diego and fell in a nailbiter to the Torero 49-45.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After three minutes of scoreless action, Aleah Sorrentino knocked down her first three pointer of the season to break the silence. The USD would then put in their first bucket of the game on a made layup, but Bella Vinson hit a three-pointer to increase Lipscomb's lead to four. Unfortunately, the Bisons would not add on any more points of their own but held USD to 3-of-16 shooting from the floor and 0-of-3 from deep for a 6-6 score after one.

Vinson got off to a hot start in the second quarter with five early points including midrange jumper and a three pointer. Then, after a USD bucket, Vinson would strike again on a layup to make it 13-8, to bring her point total to eight with 7:13 remaining in the second.

USD would follow with a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the contest, but Sorrentino provided a huge basket to stop another run on an assist from Blythe Pearson. Both teams traded baskets to close the quarter, as USD held a 23-22 advantage at the break.

Vinson's ended the first half with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting and two rebounds. Sorrentino put in five points of her own to go along with four rebounds through the first two quarters.

Every time USD scored the Bisons would have an answer in the third to keep the deficit at just one point for most of the quarter. Sorrentino led the way in the third with seven points and three board to add to her afternoon total.

With 1:10 to go in the quarter, Sorrentino put in a free throw to tie the game at 33. After a shooting foul by the Bisons on the other end, USD put in one of their two attempts at the line. The Torero followed that with a made jumper to push their lead to three. Blythe Pearson would answer with a clutch three to tie it going into the final quarter.

USD opened the final quarter with two made buckets in the paint, but the Bisons came up big again as Jalyn Holcomb connected this time on a three to stop the Torero's momentum.

Later in the period, after another USD made free throw, Pearson converted on a layup to trim their deficit back to one with 4:08 remaining.

Neither team would score for a little under three minutes, until USD made a layup to increase their lead. USD looked as if they would beginning another run but, Sorrentino scored put in a two to make it another one-point game with 39 seconds remaining forcing a USD timeout.

Ainhoa Cea would force a turnover after the timeout on the ensuing possession with a chance to take the lead, but the Bisons couldn't convert on the other end and were forced to foul.

USD hit both free throws to stretch their lead. Coach Sumski would call a timeout to draw up a play with a chance tie the game down three. After the ball was inbounded, Pearson got up a three with seven seconds left but missed, which prompted the squad to foul after a rebound by USD. USD would make one of the free throws to push the deficit to two-possession and put it out of reach with seconds remaining.
