THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb played to an 82-77 victory over Navy Monday morning in Allen Arena behind 18-point performances from
Jacob Ognacevic and
Derrin Boyd and a double-double from
Ahsan Asadullah to improve to 5-2 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lipscomb got on the board first with a pair of buckets in the post from
Ahsan Asadullah for an early 4-0 Lipscomb lead.
The teams traded buckets, but Navy settled in and eventually took its first lead, 12-10, of the morning.
Lipscomb, however, responded with a 9-0 run, highlighted by an A.J. McGinnis triple for an 18-12 lead with 11:30 remaining in the first half.
Navy then stopped the bleeding with two-straight triples, tying things 18-18 with just over 10 minutes left in the first frame.
The Bisons held strong defensively and forced five Navy turnovers over the next four minutes, outscoring the Midshipmen 52-6 for a 33-24 lead with 3:52 left in the first half.
Will Pruitt nailed a three-pointer at the end of the run, forcing a Navy timeout.
Navy cut the Lipscomb lead back down to six, but
Grant Asman converted an and-one opportunity for Lipscomb to push it back to a 41-32 lead with just over a minute left to play.
Navy scored the final five points of the half and Lipscomb took a 41-37 lead into the halftime break.
The Midshipmen came out of the halftime locker room hot, nailing a couple triples, cutting the Lipscomb lead to a pair, but the Bisons responded with buckets on the offensive end, including a pair of threes by
Trae Benham and
Derrin Boyd, to get back out to a nine-point, 51-42 lead.
Navy then went on a 9-0 run to cut the Lipscomb lead to a possession, 54-51, but Ognacevic powered and completed the traditional three-point play to get the lead back out to a pair of possessions.
Lipscomb started to struggle on the offensive end, going scoreless for nearly three minutes and Navy tied things back up at 59 a piece with eight minutes to go in regulation.
Will Pruitt was able to stop the bleeding with a driving layup to put Lipscomb back ahead.
Navy tied the game a couple more times in the next minutes, but Lipscomb used a 9-0 run over more than two minutes, getting back out to a 72-63 lead with 1:42 left and the ball.
The Bisons closed things out with good work from the charity stripe down the stretch for an 82-77 victory over Navy.
HERD NOTES
- Asadullah scored a season-high 14 points and collected 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
- Boyd and Ognacevic led scoring with 18 points apiece while Will Pruitt also had a double-digit night with 10 points.
- Lipscomb outscored Navy in the paint 40-30 and had 24 points off turnovers to the Midshipmen's 11.
- The score was tied six times throughout the game, but the lead only changed hands twice as Lipscomb led for more than 35 minutes of the game.
