NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb women's volleyball fell in a three-set loss to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks Friday night, moving to a 12-12 overall record (9-4 in ASUN play).

Seven Bisons produced for Lipscomb's offense with Logan Gish (13), Addi Pelham (12), and Caroline Stogner (11) each earning double-digit kills. Hudepohl also dished out a match-high 36 assists and collected seven digs in the matchup.

Defensively, libero Delaney Smith led the match with 15 digs, her 11th match this season to log 15+ digs in a match. The Bisons put down six blocks in the contest, led by Kailee Bass with four block assists and Caroline Stogner with three of her own.

SET 1
  • The Bisons put up a set of blocks to take the first point on a Kailee Bass kill, the squad combined to keep the Gamecocks from crossing the net until point three.
  • Play went back and forth and the two squads were tied up until the 16-16 mark, including a trio of kills for Caroline Stogner and a quartet of kills for Logan Gish.
  • Kills from Mischler and Stogner put the Bisons up 18-16 before a pair of errors made it 18-18.
  • Sophia Hudepohl put down her first dump of the match to put the Bisons up 19-18 before the Gamecocks logged a 4-1 run to go up 22-20.
  • A Gish kill held off the first Jacksonville State set point, but a blocking error gave the first set to Jacksonville State.

SET 2
  • The Bisons took the opening point in the second frame on a Pelham kill and nabbed the second point as well on a kill from Gish.
  • The Gamecocks logged a 6-0 run to take the lead and they were cut off by Pelham's second kill of the set.
  • A pair of kills from Mischler, a Gish kill, and a three-point serving run from Mischler closed the gap to 11-10 in favor of Jacksonville State.

  • Pelham put down three of Lipscomb's first four kills of the set on her way to nine kills in two sets.

SET 3

FROM THE BENCH – HC BRANDON ROSENTHAL
"I thought overall it was a good match. Obviously, it didn't go in our favor in the scores with a 3-0 final count, but I don't know if that necessarily tells you about the entire match as a whole. They hit .367 and we hit .311 and those are both pretty high numbers. I thought that in the first set we just had a couple of mental mistakes that created a gap that we couldn't really close there. In set two I thought we did a nice job of really establishing ourselves, but again, we have these stretches that I think we've seen multiple times this year where we kind of lose focus for three or four points and then it puts us in a bad spot depending on where we are score-wise.

I thought a response in set three was fantastic. As high of a level of a match as it was in sets one and two, I thought set three was just a tremendous volleyball set with both teams laying it on the line. It's really easy to look at set three and know that, obviously, having seven missed serves is killer, especially when you're battling like that. You're going to have some missives and I think it's really easy to look at that be like, "Oh, we just don't serve it in," but that's never been our style this year, and it won't be our style moving forward.

We have to believe in each one of these players to serve balls that they serve every day. A little bit of that is just needing to work through that and grow through that. What most people don't see is the time and the effort and the just the countless number of reps that they get at particular skills in practice, obviously this one being serving.

So, it's really easy to be like, "Oh, well you know we just have to do this one thing." No doubt. We talked about that, and the focus as we left the locker room before we came out was "Hey, focus on the first 10 points." We've talked about trying to do better at controlling smaller chunks of the game and, just for me, the challenge becomes how do we bring that same fire and intensity and drive that we're seeing in set three – which was a really high level – how do we see that more in set one, and really, right from the get-go.

You know, X's and O's-wise, I think it's tough to look at it and be like "Oh, this particular thing was the difference maker." I think, for me, it's just two good teams going at it. We're still growing here and I love the opportunity to get better, especially for tomorrow. We're going to have another quality match against Kennesaw State tomorrow. One, we've got to serve better – meaning more balls in, but we've got it do a little bit more with the pressure of our serve. Two, I think we have to do a better job of slowing down their hitters. When a team hits .367, that's probably the first thing that jumps out and tells us, "Hey, we've got to do a better job of blocking balls, or at least slowing them down." Then three, I think it's ultimately a matter of execution.

When we work as hard as we do in set three, we tend to execute better. When we – and I hate to say "Don't work hard," because our girls are working all the time, but there's a different level of work. So, the different level of work is what you saw in sets one and two versus set three. I thought our level in set three was fantastic. The tough part is that their level in three was pretty good as well, but that's volleyball and that's where we're at in the season and against the competition.

So, we have to come back tomorrow with that same tenacity that we finished with and bring out that out on the front end of things and then see what kind of things go our way. I've always said that a lot of times, the harder you work, the more things will go our way and I thought we put ourselves in a great position tonight to win set three and to extend the match. It was a little bit similar to our Liberty matches. We're still growing through this piece of it and, you know, everybody wants to be at their best right now and I think that the small steps that we can take here are going to help us moving forward.

Individually, I thought Sophia [Hudepohl] was fantastic and set a really, really good match and helped put ourselves in a great spot to attack. I thought that [Logan] GIsh just really stepped up. This is a little bit more of what we saw out of her towards the end of last year and, again, I have no doubt that this is why she's come back to be with us for a fifth year.

So, we've got two and a half weeks to get better and that's what we're trying to do each and every day. Obviously, the results didn't go our way tonight, but we've talked about some things and we'll make some changes and we'll see how we go about creating those changes and then see what results we can get from those changes."
