THE SHORT STORY: Eastern Kentucky used impressive second and third quarters to defeat Lipscomb Women's Basketball 82-69 Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Eastern Kentucky scored the first bucket, but it was all Lipscomb for the next few minutes.
Casey Collier scored the first points for Lipscomb with a beautiful back door cut for a layup that sparked a 7-0 Lipscomb run.
Blythe Pearson capped off the run with a triple, giving Lipscomb an early 7-2 lead.
After going scoreless for nearly three minutes, Eastern Kentucky cut the Lipscomb lead 8-5 but Lipscomb was able to extend its lead back out 14-8 at the first media timeout with the help of back-to-back triples by
Bella Vinson and Pearson.
Out of the media timeout, Eastern Kentucky clawed back and outscored Lipscomb 13-7 to tie things up 21-21 at the end of the first quarter.
The Colonels took its first lead, 23-21, since the first bucket to start the second quarter, connecting on a pair of free throws. EKU continued with the momentum and forced a couple Lipscomb turnovers and connected on its first triple of the night for a 26-21 lead with 7:57 left in the second quarter.
Collier broke the Bisons' scoring drought by driving the basket and drawing a foul. She connected on her free throws to pull Lipscomb back within a possession. Collier continued to carry the Lipscomb offense scoring on the next possession, but the Colonels mounted a 12-5 run over the next four minutes for a 38-30 lead with 3:34 left in the half. The Colonels continued to give Lipscomb trouble on both ends of the floor and took a 48-33 lead into the halftime break.
The Colonels started where they left off with a triple on their first possession, but a couple of free throws and back-to-back treys by
Jalyn Holcomb cut EKU's lead 51-41.
The teams continued to trade blows through the third quarter and back-to-back triples from
Jordan Peete kept the Bisons in striking distance as Lipscomb trained 63-53 with two minutes left in the third quarter.
Eastern Kentucky kept Lipscomb at bay for the final minutes and took a 66-53 lead into the final stanza. The squads scored 16 each in the fourth as Eastern Kentucky went on to defeat Lipscomb 82-69.
HERD NOTES
- Pearson led Lipscomb with 13 points while Jalyn Holcomb contributed 12. The pair connected on seven triples.
- Collier and Peete both notched 10 points while Vinson contributed nine.
- Holcomb brought down a team-high five rebounds.
