Men’s Tennis Claims Victory Over Two Local Foes Heading Into Road Trip

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb men's tennis picked up two wins this weekend as they faced off against Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State in home matches at the Richland Country Club. The Bisons defeated the Golden Eagles on Friday in a tight 4-3 triumph before beginning their Saturday match against the Tigers with a doubles point before emerging with a 6-1 victory.

"I think this weekend was huge for us," said head coach Geoff Hernandez. "We haven't beaten Tennessee Tech in a few years, they essentially dominate the OVC, and we battled well with them."

The Bisons' Friday match began with the Golden Eagles collecting the doubles point. Pedro Uribe and Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto partnered on court one (1-6) while Sam Fischer and Jake Penny competed at the No. 2 position (3-6).

"We started the day with a poor doubles performance and then just found a way in singles," said Hernandez. "This match was so huge for a couple guys – with Gonzalo and Sam coming through, and then obviously Maksim has been so solid."

Maksim Bogdanovich earned his third singles victory of the season as he collected the Bisons' first point of the match. Bogdanovich earned his victory at the No. 1 position as the second singles match to finish in a three-set fight, emerging victorious 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

The Bisons racked up the final three points of the match on courts four, five, and six. Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto secured the point at the No. 4 position in a 2-0 defeat of his Tennessee Tech opponent (6-3, 6-4) while Alex Mesquida earned the point on court five, going up 5-2 in the first set before his opponent retired due to injury.

Sam Fischer secured the clinch point to win the match at the No. 6 position in a three-set showdown with the Golden Eagles' Jun Sasagawa (7-5, 4-6, 6-4).

"That match gave us had such a high and we played Tennessee State the next day," Hernandez said. "They came out full force and put on a great match and we handled it well to finish 6-1."

The Bisons pushed their success on Saturday in their match against Tennessee State.

Court three was the first to finish during doubles play as Maksim Bogdanovich and Luka Stojanovic added a 6-1 win to their tally as partners and court two finished shortly after. Sam Fischer and Jake Penny partnered at the No. 2 position to earn a 6-1 triumph and secure the Bisons' first point of the match.

The first four singles points went to the Bisons, beginning with two 2-0 wins from Pedro Uribe and Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto on courts two and four (6-2, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-4).

Luka Stojanovic fell in a three-set struggle to Tennessee State foe Pierre Copin before Carlos Salas Tulla secured the Bisons' victory 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.

"This was a really positive way for us to head into a road trip," coach Hernandez said. "We put some emphasis on mental toughness and that's pretty much all we saw. I'm really proud of the team and we have a lot of momentum now, moving forward."
