Men’s Tennis Drops Two on Road Trip Against Southern Conference Opponents

GREENVILLE, S.C. / CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Lipscomb's men's tennis team departed on a road trip to face two opponents from the Southern Conference. The Bisons fell 1-6 against Furman University and 3-4 to Chattanooga.

Lipscomb 1, Furman 6
The squad headed to Greenville, S.C. on Saturday to square off with the Furman Paladins to start off the weekend. Lipscomb switched up their pairings from previous matches in an effort to claim the doubles point against their Southern Conference foes.

Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto and Sam Fischer partnered on one and fell to their opponents 2-6. Alex Mesquida and Carlos Salas Tulla paired up to take on the Paladins on court three and took a 6-3 victory from their opponents. However, the doubles point went to Furman after a battle of a match on two from Maksim Bogdanovich and Pedro Uribe (5-7).

The Paladins pushed on in singles play towards what first appeared to be a sweep, but graduate student Sam Fischer stood tall on five to claim the Bisons lone point for the match. The Brentwood, Tenn. product faced off with Furman's Emil Westling in three sets, going 6-7, 6-2, and 1-0(10-3) in the final match of the day.

Lipscomb 3, Chattanooga 4
Chattanooga, Tenn. was the Bisons' destination for their Sunday match against the Chattanooga Mocs. The Bisons put forward the same doubles pairings but dropped the point to the Mocs despite a 6-4 victory for Garcia-Nieto and Fischer on one.

The first point in the singles matches went to Chattanooga after Maksim Bogdanovich fell 3-6, 2-6 to his opponent, but the Bisons struck back with three points from courts six, four, and five. Carlos Salas Tulla notched Lipscomb's first point of the match as he bested his opponent 6-0, 6-3 at the sixth position.

The second Bison point was posted by Alex Mesquida on four as he dispatched the Mocs' Peyton Gatti 6-3, 6-4. Sam Fischer carried on the momentum with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph at the fifth position to bring the Bisons into a 3-2 lead.

Court two was the next to finish and despite a strong showing from graduate student Pedro Uribe, the Mocs brought it to an even 3-3 as Uribe went down 4-6, 4-6 to his Chattanooga foe. The final decision rested on court three where Garcia-Nieto faced off with the Mocs' Kerim Hyatt. In a heartbreaker of a result, Garcia-Nieto fell 5-7, 4-6 to Hyatt to settle the match in favor of the Mocs.
